Ethanol makes engine ping

Hi!

re: 2004 Intrepid ES 3.7L

Ever since all gas has added ethanol, my engine has been pinging. (Yes, I have regular maintenance performed per schedule, oil is good, use low octane gas-86, 64k miles, still get decent mileage-26/30)
Before, I just switched to gas with no ethanol & the pinging stopped. Now that is not possible.
Is there anyway to neutralize the enthanol in the tank, or some other fix?
Thanx!

Step up the octane. For now toss in some STP octane booster to help richen the fuel some.

Stepping up to Mid grade is correct. Better octane.

OK, we're 3 for 3 on increasing octane. Will try that once I get down to E (ouch! my poor wallet!).
Soooo... why would more octane help? Won't that increase the over-firing even more than the ethanol already does? (can you tell I'm a girl?!)
BTW- how does ethanol & higher octane affect plugs?

Actually, with a name like lduMALE I wouldn't guess you're a girl.

Octain slows the burn rate of gasoline. Pinging comes from the flame front of the explosion 'impacting' the piston... by adjusting the octain rate you can keep the flame front slower, thus eliminating the the impacting.

You will find no changes to your plugs by changing fuel octain ratings, IMO.

Haha! good one on the name pun!

Anyhooo, thanks for the info. Makes sense... I was backwards on octane & burn rate.
Happy trails!

Don't run away just because you're fixed up.. Report back what you find by changing fuel, and post up some pictures of the car some time.

Oh, and WELCOME TO THE BOARD!

Decent mileage? Either I'm driving really wrong, or I have some issues that neither I nor any mechanics I've visited have noticed, because I'm barely getting 20 with about 50% city, 50% highway driving.

Mind you, since you're driving an Intrepid "EX" with some magical 3.7L, I could tell at least. ;)

Just being a fellow female and all..
