Question Intrepid Auto Temperature Control

I'm considering swapping out my manual temperature control with an automatic. A few questions:

are these "plug and play," or do i need to do some wiring modifications?
what's the benefit to auto vs manual? (besides looking cooler and the possibility of being more convenient)

with regard to temperature, when you set it to 72, for example, will it blow air that's 72 degrees? or will it blow until it's 72 degrees in the car? i noticed there's no knob or switch for "cool/heat" so how would you switch between them? i know these seem like really stupid questions that only an idiot would ask...but i've never even seen an ATC unit in a car in person before. would it be a good upgrade/mod to do?

also considering the concorde cluster (black w/ chrome)...are these plug and play, or do I need to modify any wiring?

For ATC (from what I've read), you'll have to swap dash harnesses, lower blower harness, swap blower resistor pack, and add a sun sensor if you don't have one. A bit of a chore (you'll need to pull the dash). From what I've read, ATC blasts cold\hot air until the desired temperature is reached.

As for the concorde cluster, they are plug and play as long as you don't have auto-stick. If you do have auto-stick, just swap the concorde face (they come out easily) and put it on your current cluster.

You will have to pull the dash off and replace the upper & lower harnesses with ones from a donor car that had ATC along with replacing the manual blower control resistor with the digital blower control module in order for you to do this tedious, but excellent mod.

Use the search feature and read some of the how-to's on this topic.
You can manage to do it alone like I did, but having someone help you do it is highly recommended.

thanks for the info! sounds like way too much work for something that can be very simple. oh well, i'll definitely consider it, but can't commit to it (yet).

hell, i don't even have the car right now. all my mods are on hold as of 7pm last night. my 2.7 up and died on me. had to have it towed out of my garage this afternoon. was running very rough last night, stalled, and hasn't started since. killed the battery too. i'll take care of the mechanical issues first...after all, what good is ATC if the car doesn't run?!

For future reference, there used to be a How-To to do some splicing of the existing dash harness. I waited until my evap. failed and killed 2 birds with one stone (replaced the harness).

Some people say they like the MTC better, but I prefer ATC. You select the temp. and it pretty much holds it. Oh - yeah - you might have to bump it one way or the other a couple of degrees every once in a while if outside conditions change, but I think it's easier than turning a dial with no point of reference - to much trial and error.

If you put it on 'auto', it controls everything except the temp. set point automatically. It even determines the fan speed automatically depending on how far off the actual temp. is compared to the set point. But you can always take it out of 'auto' and control *everything* manually. IOW it's very flexible.

Good luck with the engine!
