K&N CAI vs. J-Intake

Hello All! I am new to this site (and new to finally being handed down the Intrepid I wanted for the last 4 years or so) and have already been bitten by the mod bug. I have the dreaded 2.7L engine in my 1998 trep, however it has recently been completely overhauled so it's in great shape.

The mod I most want to do to it right now is a CAI. I have been researching here and all over the web about the K&N and the J-Intakes, and I was wondering what the differences are. I'm pretty savy on this stuff, but I just wanted to get some opinions on which one people here recommend. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I personally think the J-Intakes look allot better than the the K&N with its standard black plastic tube and performance wise i believe they would be the same.

Thanks Crypt. I was looking at the J-Intakes website and they do look pretty awesome. I think that's the way I'm leaning. Has anyone had any issues with them, like the heat shield wearing out or anything? That's pretty much my only worry I think

I don't recall hearing about any issues of any kind with them.

I have had both on my car....
The J-Intake has a good quality intake tube, but the heat shield is a bit on the weak side.
The K&N is good quality all around, but can be a bit pricey.

I would look on Amazon to see if you can find a good price on it.
Do a search for the K&N part number (57-1522 IIRC)

Thanks Shadow, much appreciated. I found the K&N for like $200 on Amazon, so I think that's the way I'll end up going. You're definitely right about the price though, if I hadn't found it there there's no way I would've ponied up almost $300 for it on some of the other places. Thanks guys

I got my K&N for $100 used, put about 35k on it so far.

It's only really helps with the larger engines as the HO manifolds have a butterfly valve set up which opens up past 5000rpm. But it sounds way better than stock either engine.

thanks for the link post Crypt that does look like about the cheapest anywhere. WLB136 other than the sound (which I heard was awesome) did you notice any actual performance increase? K&N says it'll give about 5hp, but do you feel that at all?

You can feel it slightly at the top end. But in all reality, youre really not going to feel 5 hp. I love my K&N because it really amps up the aggressive factor on the engine. It bellows under WOT. I could post a video, but I have exhaust so it might be hard to hear the difference just the K&N makes

See my whole thing about using K&N filters is while they may offer better airflow when new, they don't offer better filtration.

There's some test data here.

http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html

I've never seen hard data from K&N that shows their filtration is as good or better than, say, a Pureolator PureOne air filter.

I love both of my K&N air filters. One drop in in the stock air box in my Special and the CAI on my R/T. Both have been in their respective vehicles for years and neither motors have blown up yet. No blue smoke out the exhaust either.
