The 300m special half shafts

Do you all think that the dodge intrepid police intrepid might have had these instaled on there cars at all. For the performance side of things. Besides how maney would have been installed and can they be rebuild or re done HAVE ANY OF OUR MEMBERS INSTALLED THESE ON THERE INTREPIDS AT ALL AND HOW INVOLVED IS THE MOD TO DO. ANY HELP OR INPUT WOULD BE APPRECIATED

I believe they are plug-n-play swappable.

Special half shafts came.....well only on the Special !!

They interchange on any other 2nd gen LH(1998-2004) and vice versa.

If you are going to swap the 300 Special half shafts in, I'd think you should do both at the same time. Of course maybe the torque steer wouldn't be noticeable. If/when you do the swap, why not test and find out.

Torque steer due to mismatched shafts? That shouldn't make a difference, or maybe I'm not understanding your comment.

Sure, the stiffer shaft will flex less.

To a small degree yes, and very briefly. So you're right.

If it were enough to make a difference, it would be so short-lived as to not be noticeable - only as long as it takes for the shaft wind (as in spring wind) to occur and the diff. to equalize the torque. Most torque steer effect (for a longer time) is from the torque of the motor causing more downward force on one wheel and less on the other, so one wheel spins more easily - when it is spinning, the friction of the differential creates different rearward forces to the two wheels resulting in the torque steer into the steering gear.

But - yes - there is some brief component from different axle stiffness.

Thus the suggestion to test it with one of each and report back. Think also about the loading differences when under sudden, hard acceleration. The different shaft stiffness may make one side always be the one to get loose first. Less than ideal. But you're right, the average driver going from point A to point B would never notice a difference. (But hey, what fun is that?!? )

Does anyone have a specific dimension that I can use to check if the police Intrepids already have this heavy-duty half shaft?

According to the parts catalogs. The Special is the only one that got Special half shafts. I just checked all 3 years catalogs 2002-2004.

If you go to O'reilly Auto Parts website, they list new front half shafts for a 300m Special. The part numbers are CH8075 and CH8076 and the only application under the compatability section is the 2002-2004 300M Special.
I don't know if they actually are made to the 300M specs but to my knowledge they are supposed to be.
I think someone needs to have Oreillys order a left special and a left regular cv. shaft and check to see if they are different.
It will probably be me here in the next couple days.
