HELP P1685 code

I got a code p1685 which is invalid skim key. The car ran fine for a week then started acting up see my pcm issues thread.

My question now is I've let the car on with the skim key zip tied to the skim module for an hr. Still nothing.

Getting this code means what exactly? The key is bad, the skim is bad, the pcm is locked from my idiot brother trying to start the car?

Is the code clearable? If so how besides the obvious.

Am I gonna have to do another dash harness swap to get the car to run again? Meaning pull the ATC dash harness and put back in the MTC harness.

Not an expert on this, but I believe I've read that you can reset the SKIM disable by leaving the ignition on for an hour (minimize loads or put a charger on it to prevent battery discharge).

EDIT: See post no. 8 here: https://www.dodgeintrepid.net/showthread.php?t=216945

I reset mine at Dans spring meet by unplugging the battery for an hour and allowing the system to discharge. Sounds like you have the same issue I had. When I put my Special PCM in, I had to add SKIM. I taped the key to the bottom of the module and it worked fine for a few starts. The it locked out on me. easiest way to fix it is to install the ignition lock cylinder from the SKIM car, that way you can use the SKIM key. I did that and havent had an issue since.

tried the key for hr and still nothing. but only had a trickle charger on it not a full on charger. Also when I turn the key on the security light starts to flash I think I'm just gonna go get another pcm/skim/key get a blank skim key made to the original key cylinder then program the key to the skim so I don't have 2 seperate keys for doors

Ok I was told what I did wrong by the dealer as I had to go to them to get the skim reprogrammed to the pcm b/c of the 1685 code. Below is a synopsis of what happened.

I got the car running with a '01 300M pcm and skim with the key taped to the skim module and hanging under the dash. I was uncomfortable with that set-up just b/c if for some reason the key fell out or it vibrated to much it would do the start and shut off scenario. And my mom not knowing wtf is up would keep trying to start the car thereby locking out the pcm.

So... in my infinite wisdom I decided to mount the skim module normally and zip tie the key to the ignition cylinder well with-in range of the skim. I tried to start the car after all was said and done and lo and behold it started and shut off. I'm like wtf checked made sure the skim was plugged in the key was close enough to the skim module tried again to start it and it shut off again. So I did the key dance and got the 1685 code.

So I removed the skim module and taped the key to it again and turned on the ignition. At that time I noticed the security light flashing and I DID NOT attempt to start the car. I called the dealer they said as long as I have the vin from the donor car the skim came from they could program it. So I took the car up to the dealer for a skim programming which should have only taken a few minutes but ended up taken 4 hr's.

It turns out that the head of the serty key needs to be OUTSIDE of the skim module and not just near it like I had assumed. So a word to the wise when your doing a dash harness swap that involves skim make sure you place the sentry key as shown below to avoid any issues with the skim. I will post this in the Mods section as well.

Why would it have to be outside of the module? It is a proximity reader, just like the non-swiping credit card machines - the farther away you are, the less likely of a read, not the closer you are...

Not saying it won't work, but really wondering the electro-mechanics of it - something doesn't smell right.

I took my key to the swamp meet and made a copy without a skim, the key worked for years. I since lost the original key. I left the car sitting for about 1 yr and a half then jump started the car. it started right up. I drove it for about 15 miles, parked it in front of my house. turn it off, waited for about 2 min tried to start it and it would turn but no start. I tried the switching on and off of the ignition and got the P1685 code. now what can I do ??? Oh if I wait about 1/2 hour the car will start righ up ?
