whats it take to retrofit a pre02 3.5 for a 02? i need a motor

im having a real tough time getting a 3.5 for a reasonable price (junkyard/250-300) i can only find one at thoes "full service" guys... (1200-1500)..

but my goal is to strip it to parts and rebuild it as a stroker. so i dont need it "running" or to cost $900 more.... for the $900 i could get all the machining done...

SO.
I KNOW THE TONE-RING ON THE CAM, AND FLYWHEEL ARE DIFFERENT, AND THE WIRHARNESS HAS DIFFERENT PLUGS.

that all being said:
If i use my flywheel from my 02 2.7 and buy 02 3.5 cam tonerings, and buy a new wireharness.... whatelse is in the way?

i can find a 99-01 like finding dirt outside... but a 02-04... yeash

or can someone help me source a 3.5 in the southwest region??? im in so.California.

my step-dad is friends with the owner of the Az pullapart yard near goodyear and has been trying to get me one. but his people are telling him the same crap about this being a hard-to-find motor.

just spent all-day at pick-a-parts for nothing....again..

Yep! It's a damn hard to find motor these days. I just bought a whole car for parts as it was crunched on the left side. I figured the motor and trans alone were worth the cost of the car, (Not to mention all the parts that are usually damaged by the junkyard when removing it). I ended up with a decent interior for another car as a bonus.

It is a bit more work but worth it for the "Extras"

a friend suggested just that same thing...
actually they all say i should just get a used whatever. there NUTS! i want a civic like i want a hole in my head.
anyways , its actually a great idea. but im in more of a hurry.. and around here even a wrecked one is hard to find or run 1k+

i found one a few hours away someone is parting-out. made him an offer of $500 for the motor with 130k miles.

Finding 01-04 production runs of the 3.5L motor is next to impossible. The motor is a real solid piece of equipment, so it's not something that is scrapped often, and when they are scrapped, people know what they're worth, to just extort those who want them.

If you were desperate enough to want one out of Maine, I know where there is a junked Police Intrepid with the 3.5L H.O, side swiped, 2004 model. Engine could be had for $200-$400 easily.

Best bet is too do what we're all doing now, find some LH that's been cosmetically abused or neglected or in a minor scrape for a cheap chunk of nickels.

You will need all the sensors as well I believe, to convert a 98-00 motor to fit a 01-04 car. Wouldn't suggest cutting and splicing an engine harness.

any idea how to get it here or howmuch that would cost? last time i had a pallet shipped it was about $250. if i could get the main wire harness that might not be out of my budget/or desire. i need the whole thing from the TB down..but id be intrested in the PCM (if its avail.)from that beast also.
if i could get it for 400 that would probably be totally worth it. the policealternater is better then standard isnt it??

*edit i passedup a 01 today because 3.5 demonic's 3.5 conversion manual says 02,03,04 for my 02. whereas the 01 has the 98+ tone rings?

Sorry, my mistake it's 98-01 and 02-04 for production runs, typo on my part.

Wanna know that crappy part about that Police Trep? Someone beat both you and me to the PCM/Skim/Ignition key and alternator. I managed to snag the Cluster and going back for the Sway bars. The alternator does output more power and the PCM is ungoverned. So someone here is building a pimped Intrepid as well besides for me! Finding another Police, 300M Special or RT Intrepid is going to be impossible without outsourcing to other states or countries, so you can imagine how much I'm kicking myself for missing out on that freebie.

No clue on the cost for shipping. But I bought my 03 3.5L motor there out of a loaded ES model that was also side swiped. It was a complete drop: all the accessories, wiring, hoses, starter, everything I wanted pretty much for the $400 he asked (worst part is I could have slammed him down a few bucks too). He has "no value" in the motors he says amusingly.

Worst case, if you didn't want to bother with the motor, I can snag the wiring harness for you one day while I'm there. Anything to help out a fellow Trepp'er. I was looking at the idea of converting a 98-01 motor to fit my 03 LH and it's costly as hell getting the "needed" parts, people wanted $300 for the harness and another $200 for the Intake! I can snag the harness for nothing - literally.

Other then that Trep and the ES I yanked my 3.5 out of there isn't another wrecked or junked 02+ 3.5L LH in state or even the large Atlantic Canada yards. Trust me, I've dug around big time and drove far and long. I'm too dedicated lol.

I wasn't aware Police Edition Intrepids had SKIM? LOL! Maybe it was a dealer option?

The PCM in a Police Intrepid also has a speed governor on it. It's higher than other Intrepids but still governed. As far as I know the only Intrepid PCM that isn't speed-limited is the one in the 2000 R/T.

Aren't all models 2002+ skim on LH? Either way, open the door and hop inside and the key and ignition was yanked along with the PCM out of the engine bay. I assumed the skim as well as I have never seen a 02+ LH without it.

Seriously? Disappointing to hear, I've read many times the Police, 300M Special and RT's are ungoverned trims...

If the plastic on the key isn't Gray..it's not SKIM. The only line of LH cars I know of that would all be SKIM is the 300m.

All Intrepid SE cars are non-SKIM including 2002 and later.

And did you see/retrieve a SKIM Module from that Police Intrepid?

I'm aware of how to distinguish a SKIM key from a regular key. As I was saying, I was under the impression that all 02+ LH cars utilized the SKIM system. Read many threads here and other forums stating it was a production run feature and not a dealership option. Example of such threads, if it's a 2003 model, you'll need the skim and key to make the PCM work... etc. lol. Which explains my surprise to hear differently.

No, I didn't see nor retrieve a SKIM module. Once I noticed the PCM gone, and looked inside to see the Key and Ignition yanked, I assumed it was SKIM. If it wasn't SKIM equipped then why yank all the hardware, where the computer would essentially plug and play in that case? Converting a SKIM car to non-SKIM perhaps? Rather curious now!

You might want to do a little more research then. Maybe post up a thread or two where you saw SKIM was a standard item in 2002+? I think you're confusing the Special PCM threads where it's discussed it's best to have the entire set...PCM/SKIM Module/Key(s) or threads where people want to replace their PCM with a junkyard one and they're warned to make sure the donor car items match what they currently have. I've never seen a thread that states all 2002 and later LH cars had SKIM. If that's not the case...post a link to it.

Hence why I said impression. Now I stand corrected.

I just recall reading above mentioned situations often. As you said, may have misunderstood to an extent. Either way irrelevant to this thread.

You have everything listed besides one thing I was told which was the Intake Plenum. As they deleted the EGR valve in 2002+ models. That said, I've seen a few 3.5 guys delete their EGR valves and cap off the hoses.

I was in your boat six months ago, dying for a 3.5 for my 2.7 swap, but finding it impossible to track 02+ models down and the costs of converting a 98-01 were quite substantial. So if I can yank you any parts off you need let me know, I generally get things for nothing at the yard anyways. Anything to help another Trep'er.

i looked up my conversion manual too..

EGR.
Plenum and TB.
alt (im replacing anyways)

so that plenum and TB...thats almost too hard to track to make it worthwhile. im sure the differances are only minor layout or deleting a device.

treplovin- any idea how many miles on the engine? maybe 200 could work for me with a missing alt. i'll call AAA and ask them for idea's. and some tow yards.

this isnt exactly a Fedex'able item.
