(see, im asking both 1st and 2nd gen forums) eees eet mount an aftermarket thermostat that would lower the temp of the coolant at running temperature; to make it run cooler. my experience (97 es) the car runs better cool...

I hate to see someone's post go unanswered. Here's my take on this and my experience comes from being part of another website where they are total maniacs about engine cooling. Volkswagen!

Cars are designed to utilize engine heat management to improve mileage, emissions, proper ignition, etc. A too-cool engine is not a good thing. Unless you know your thermostat to be malfunctioning or maybe you idle constantly, there is no need to contemplate going to a different t'stat. People who do switch (because they think it's better for their engine) thermostats burn out fan bearings (their fans run much more), see their mileage drop and other not so good things happen. I don't advise this.

If you want to assist in speeding the cooling process, think about changing to a semi-synthetic or synthetic oil but only in the lightest weight you need for your ambient operating temperatures.
