replacing rear 6x9's

Has anyone replaced the factory rear 6x9's? How do you get to them? Approx how long did it take? What's a good replacement? I have MB Quartz up front.

Wife says she'll help with mods that take less than 2 hours. Wu-Who!!

Not sure how to do it, but I've heard good things about the Infinity Kappa and the Infinity Reference. MB Quart is good too.

I took out the bolts that hold the seat belts to the center of the rear seat. Then pulled of the panneling where the seatbelts go in behind the doors. To get the rear deck off, I think you just pull it. If you lift it up a bit, you can see the metal clip that holds it on. That exposes the speakers

I did it a year ago, so my it isn't that clear in my mind. Plus, my seats don't fold down, so I don't know how it affects it.

I have also heard that putting 6.5s in the back sounds better. I don't remember why, though.

He means 6.5" round speakers. They are not neccesarily "better" than a 6x9 speaker. You have to remember, a 6x9 has the same surface area of an 8" subwoofer, and there are models of 6x9's that can reproduce frequencies as low as 28Hz. (The threshold for human hearing is 20Hz.)

I don't know the difference B/C the R/T,ES, and SE, but I have an SE Intrepid and I replaced my 6X9's about 2 months ago... In order to do this you must pull the thick carpet thats at the bottom of the rear deck. You get to it from the trunk. after you pull it out of the trunk, you'll see a metal clip, you must pull the clip back and then up through the little hole.... once you do that, get out of the trunk and into the back seat and pull the back out the rear seat... doing that will give you access to remove the rear deck, and revel the 6X9's the rest is unscrewing and unhooking the speakers.... this took me about 1-2 hours... Have fun....... ;)

Speaking of the rear 6x9's, does anyone know off hand what's in the front doors? And how about the 120W Amp? Thsi is one of th efirst things I want to do to the car is replace the audio system. I mean the stock system isn't bad... just there is much better.

There either 5.25" or 6.5".

Go to Crutchfield to find out your specifics.

Man you guys are lucky, I have an ES with fold down seats and it was a royal pain to get to my 6x9's. But in the end, I ended up just diconnecting them and replacing my fronts and adding subs.

Click the link in my signature for pictures of all kinds of replacements to the front. The stero is finished, but I never took any photos.

Thanks Warlord187,

Crutchfield worked, I had been there before, but didn't dig deep enough for the info.

Now all I am wondering is where are the other set of speakers in the 8 speaker setups? I know I have the two rears, the two in the doors, and the two (tweeters likely?) in the forward corner of the windows, where did they stash the others in the infinity systems?

I am seriously considering getting the following:
Infinity Kappa 60.3cs 6-1/2" Component System
Infinity Kappa 693.3i 6"x9" 3-way Speakers

The component system has woofers and tweeters and apperently surrounds, and I am wondering where to put those? Anyone delt with those before? I would also like suggestions on what to replace the 120W Amp with?

Thanks all for your help.

Suggestion......I have a pretty nice system in my '99 (see bottom), but I highly recommend top-mounting whatever speakers you put in the rear. I have Diamond Audio M5 6.5" components in the front and rear, and the rears sound like a$$ because they have to go through so much carpet and panel. When I tool off the rear deck to make sure they were working properly, they sounded great. Get a good dealer/installer to custom cut your rear deck, it will be well worth the extra couple of bucks.

Deepred,
The Infinity sound system consists of 2 6x9's in the rear deck, 2 6.5" speakers in the front doors, 2 2-way 2.5" speakers in the mirror sail panels (4 speakers total) and the center dash speaker. 9 speakers total and of course the 240 watt amp hidden at the passenger kick panel.

Does anyone know the true spec's of the factory amp?
