Stereo Install............

First, as a Junior member, I would like to thank everyone for the information and ideas they have shared with me.
Today, I swapped out my '98 ES OEM Cassette Stereo with a Sony M610. I used the wire harness & trim adapters and the install went fairly easy. However, I m getting No sound out of the OEM speakers which worked fine. I have triple checked my wiring on the two harnesses, the ground, and the stereo itself. I get power, radio reception, NO SOUND. I don't think the speakers are powered by an amp because this is not an Infinity setup. I know its probably a simple resolution but I'll take any suggestions on where to look next. Thanks.

Did your original stereo have 4 or eight speakers?

If it had 4 speakers, it is the base stereo and has no amp.

If it has eight speakers, it is the Midline system and has a 120 Watt 4 channel Amp.

If it has 9 speakers, it is the Infinity I system and has a 240 Watt 6 channel Amp.

If it has 11 speakers, then it is the Infinity II system and has a 320 Watt 9 channel Amp.

I guess that I have 8. 1 in each front door, 1 on each front pillar and 4 in rear. But where is the amp located?

If you have the midline system it is located in the right front cowl. (kickpanel)

If you have the Infinity I it is also located in the right front cowl thingee.

The Infinity II is in the trunk on the right side.

If my system does have an amp(since I have 8 speakers)them should'nt there be a ground wire that was attached to the OEM Head unit. I have the braided strap that was bolted to the radio as a gound. I thought there was only an Amp with the Infinity system.

Correction: There should be a ground(or some type of connection) previuosly from the Amp. I only have a strap that was a ground for the OEM head unit.

On the package for your wiring harness, it tells you a certain way to hook up the stereo thats has a factory amp..look into that once.

I had the same problem when I hooked up my Kenwood. Everything worked, but no sound. In my case it turned out that the wiring schematic provided by the vendor misidentified a couple of the wires from the Intrepid's wiring harness. If I remember correctly, It identified a power wire as a power antenna lead. Seeing as how my car never had a power antenna lead, this was obviously not correct. I will verify when I get home, but in the mean time you may want to see if you are trying to hook into a non-existant power antenna wire...

Sorry, I can't seem to find any of the paperwork involved with the installation of my stereo. I can't even locate my owner's manual for the Kenwood unit I put in. They all have to be around here somewhere. I'll keep looking...

Thanks everyone for your input. My Sony sounds great. As 'Intrepidatious' stated, the 8 speaker system does have an Amp. A wire for it is included in the harness. Once connected, the HU will override the Amp. Thanks again.
