hmm-modifying the ecm question.

I was wondering if anyone knows where the ecm is on these cars and how hard is it to access. I'm trying to get one out of a donor car and attempt to reprogram it (I have the tools at work to do this). What I'm looking to do is raise the air/fuel ratios a bit and see what kind of power gains are possible and if this can be accomplished at all.
Thanks,
BK

BK - quite a few of us have pondered that as well. Seems that one of the reasons that the aftermarket doesn't do this is because these engines are "tuned" at the optimum from the factory. There are a couple of companies that have add on modules or reprogam your own computer but there have been no increases when these are added. The reprogram company (ASE I think) even had HAND drawn dyno results on their webpage. Hmmm.

I was curious because on www.thirdgen.org (when I had a Firebird) there are guys there burning thier own chips, so I got the idea of trying one for us. I just wanted to see if I could tweak this a little more for low end.

BK - that is where we need it too! The car rocks after it gets off the line, but the problem is getting it off the line, eh? They are "still" working on the dragstrip here, not finished, but when it is I'll be using my idea of smaller wheels (14 or 15") with the lowest and widest tires I get get to fit. THAT should get it off the line but you wouldn't want to try to drive it that way everyday. Good luck with your idea. Hope you can get into that thing and come up with a good mod for us to use.

Even assuming air/fuel ratios are already optimum, I'm sure that the spark curve could be reprogrammed for more advance timing. It would require moving up to premium but it might be worthwhile.
