Motorized antenna

I know we've talked about this before, but I would really like to get this:

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-bc9LgOa5niG/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=2&g=731&i=1 2044PW22B&o=M&a=

Here are my questions:

1. Does the Factory headunit have a connector for a power antenna?

2. How easy is this really to install?

Thanks in advance

The power antenna from what I know, works when there is power to the head unit, so when you turn it on, up it goes, and when you turn it off it goes down. I has the power antenna on my 1st gen, it broke so I had to replace it, it was a breeze, no time at all, but it might take you some time because you might have to do some wiring to the head unit, but I doubt it. So your lookin at one easy install.

I figure if I do it, I'll do it the same time I install the changer, so I'll already have tht headunit out.

But I thought some headunits had a special plug on the back for power antennas?

I was under the impression they are only up then you are listening to ther radio, and they go donw when listening to a CD? That's why I think they would need a special plug...

I know all the aftermarket units have a seperate wire for power antennas....I'm thinking the power antenna needs something to let it know the radio is on...no signal flows thru the antenna wire back to the antenna from the radio to let it know the radio is on...99% sure you need a seperate wire.

Power antenas use the same wire as an amp would to tell it when to turn on. The wire runs from the radio to the antena and the antena would also have a hot wire and a ground wire to make it work. When the radio is turned on it sends a small current to tell the antena to turn on. When the radio goes off the power goes away telling the antena to go away. Whether it shuts off when the cd goes on, I don't know some luxury cars maybe, but ours doubtful.

for about 40 bucks u can get the auto antenna they sell at Wal-mart...did that on my last car...plus, u can have it wired(at least on my aftermarket head unit) so that it come up only when the radio's on, and not for cd's. just thought you might like to save a little money, and hey, u dont have to wait for shipping.

Does the one from wal-mart have a black mast? That's the only reason I would go thru Crutchfield, because I haven't seen black ones anywhere else.

Well, I e-mailed Crutchfield about this issue, and here is their response:

In answer to your question on a motorized antenna for your 99 Dodge
Intrepid, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that,
unfortunately, we don't carry them for your vehicle, so I don't haveany
information to share with you. The AntennaWorks antenna is not
compatible with your Intrepid. Sorry I could not be of more help there.

However, the good news is that you may be able to find an on-line vendor
using a very powerful search engine at the following address:
http://www.dogpile.com/

Good luck with your search. Please let me know whenever you need
anything else!
Is that an ad for dogpile? ;)

Looks like the model I may be able to use is: Metra / 44-PW22 ?

Power antenna's operate off a lead on the head unit called "remote turn on." In my LHS, as well as all Mopar products with the power antenna there is no provision to lower the antenna when a CD is in. It is up as long as the power to the head unit is on, down when it is off.

Find yourself a wiring schematic for the audio system. That would be able to tell you where the remote lead is. On the chance there isn't one, you can safely run the power wire off the main power to the head unit.

Oh, and you can use any power antenna as long as you have the proper amount of clearance below the fender.

There's plenty of room in the trunk

Thanks for the info!
