auugghh-nearly fried electrical system while trying to hook up OTIS today.

Ok, I followed the dirctions for hooking up the OTIS today and nearly killed my electrical system. I have 4 wires coming out out the OTIS which are purple/yellow, pink, black/green and blue/white. I pulled the black/green wire and purple/yellow and plugged them into the fuse block into the exact same spots as where they came out of the donor car's harness (at least I think I did-can't remember what wire went where but I looked at the donor harness and it seemed correct). I just plugged them into the same spot on MY harness. I then spliced the pink (from the overhead) to the pink on My harness and the blue/white (from the overhead) to the same wire on my harness and the next thing I know 1/2 my guages aren't working (fuel reading empty, check engine light on, airbag light on, etc) the odometer on the dash is reading "no bus" and the disc player is not working either. What I need to know is when I splice the pink and blue/white wires near the fuse box-I make the cut and now I have 1 wire out of my existing harness, the other wire from the overhead and the other end of the cut wire from my original harness. Do I hook up the pink wire and blue/white wires from the overhead to the wire still attached to my fuse block (original wire) or do I hook all three free ends to together? The other question in what slots do I put the purple/yellow and black/green wire. The strange thing is when I hooked up using the donor car's harness straight I was able to get it work but I lost the sunroof and the rear reading lights. I yanked the wiring and rehooked up my existing wires so only the sunroof and lights are working but not the display. I have to use the overhead console to cover the hole in the headliner. HELP!!!!

the top 2 wires are the ones that went into my fusebox

it was dark so it aint a great picture.

OK, that doesn't look like mine... I spliced into the blue wire and did something else... I don't remember... BUT, Thrasher, didn't someone say your odometer on the OTIS doesn't work? Is that how everyone else has theirs hooked up??

#5 ·
I hooked up mine the way Thrasher did and the odometer doesn't work, I don't care either way since I can always use the one in the dash. I did have the complete harness from the donor car and when I plugged it directly the odometer still wouldn't display.

Well, my odometer works. I like yours because it looks cleaner, but maybe something is wrong with that setup...

mine are plugged in the same place where they were in the original harness.

got a picture of yer harness?

maybe because i got mine out of a 99 and my car a 2001 something is different ?

I'm not sure. I'm going to unhook everything next weekend (minor electrical problem), and I'll see what happens if I set it up like yours. As for pictures... mail me a digital camera, and I'll take all the pics you want. ;)

lemme know where the purple/yellow and black/green are on yers in relation to mine in the picture above, that should be easy to do.

I had a third wire on mine that I disconnected, it was purple/black on the donor car's harness went under the purple/yellow wire. I think it goes to the auto dimming mirror. I'm going to yank the cover off my Dad's LHS (since its also a 2001 car) and see where the wires run. The only difference is his is an OTIX.

"mild electrical problem" - My horn and headlights no longer work. The dealer wants me to take "all those wires" out of the fuse box before they can do any warranty work. Even though my OTIS has been in for a year...

Oh boy-makes me wonder what I'll have to go through when I take mine in on Saturday. I checked my Dad's LHS and found out that its wired exactly like Thrashers is but did notice something else. If you pull the fuse cover away (on the LHS) there is a white connector with two wires running from it (its mounted outside the fuse block on the steel curved piece. His has the other end also hooked up. I'm not sure if this is to control the OTIX since that module is programmable.

that connector is in mine too and i have no idea what it goes too.

I rented a base Intrepid this weekend. It had that connector also, but I'm 90% sure that my car doesn't have it. The mystery continues...

Hey Don - Do you have any pics of how you connected yours? I know you don't have the lowly OTIS like the rest of us ;), but since yours works, maybe you have some insight.

I would love to help with a digital photo, got 2 cameras but have no clue how to get them on here with my reply. When I finish here, I'll look for your Email, hope it's in your profile, and send you one. I can tell all of you that I ran the WHOLE harness down the A pillar to the fuse box and just unplugged the connector for the overhead lights and replugged with the one from the OTIX. NO clipping of wires. The harness still had all of the wires and switches and light sockets for the doors, front and rear. That is how complete that harness was. So I didn't clip them either, worried about how the computer thing might read as a problem, so I just stuffed all of that into the headliner behind the OTIX opening. The OTIX does do a lot of things, but I use the same features you do, at least on a regular basis.

Don,
Do you have the sunroof? I ran the harness from the donor car straight down to the fuse block and unplugged mine. Everything worked except for the sunroof switch. I had to wire the OTIS into my harness to get everything to work.

mines got a sunroof.

BK & Thrasher:

Did you guys have a wiring harness when you did your install, or did you splice the wires yourself. Don's description of installation seems pretty simple since he had the wiring harness.

I have an OTIX with sunroof controls, I wonder if I will have to do anything different.

i spilced in the pink/blue-white wires overhead, and i ran the other 2 wires down to the fusebox and conected em to the top 2 plugs like the picture above.

I followed Thrashers instructions and it works fine (except for the overhead odometer not reading). The odometer also didn't work when I used the donor car's end connector so there is something else going on there. My sunroof wouldn't function using the donor cars harness (it didn't have the wiring for a sunroof) so I had to splice the wires from the overhead into my factory harness. Yours might be different because if you have the donor cars complete harness you may also have the wiring for the sunroof.

BK/Madtxn/others - I think ya may have hit on the difference! My R/T doesn't have a sunroof and the donor overhead doesn't have sunroof controls. Sounds like you have sunroofs and had to add your original controls to the overhead. Have I got that right? If that is indeed the case, my hat is off to you guys for creative work. I'm a plug and play kinds guy, technical things can be out of my grasp, not always, but ....
