Engine drop

Any engineer types who have considered dropping a GEN1 3.5 or a GM 3.8 into a GEN2 Intrepid? Or how about just a Northstar and be done with it? Serious question. Driveon...

Not really. The 3.5L Magnum on the R/T is better than the GM 3.8 and the 1st gen 3.5L. I know the Grand Prix GTP is a little faster and that has the GM 3.8, but it's supercharged. As for the Northstar engines, I'm not sure they would fit. But I admit I don't know a hell of a lot about the Northstar engines.

I would be more interested in developing a supercharger/turbocharger for the Intrepid. I'm seriously thinking about doing that. But it's going to be a huge undertaking.

I was looking at it from a cost point of view: a used 3.5 or 3.8 in a base Intrepid would make a nice sleeper, if conversion costs weren't out of sight. Driveon...

If you could find one cheap enough, I could see your point. I would assume they would fit.

It's not near as easy to frankenstein modern cars as it is with pre 1980 cars. There's just way too many sensors and other computer-controlled junk to deal with. Damn technology! And if you're thinking about bastardizing a Dodge with an engine from a different make, you'll also have to change the entire drivetrain with it. If you want a powerful family car, just buy a GTP. You'll save yourself alot of money and headaches. Betteryet, buy an old musclecar and make that your project. That way, you still have a car to drive while you wait for your "toy's" engine to be balanced and blueprinted, etc.

As far as the supercharger is concerned there was one designed for the 2.7 liter engine. Problem is that it won't fit in the engine bay of the Intrepid and Dodge hasn't made it avaliable to the public yet. It was designed for some future cars coming out in a year or two.

Vortec will design one for you but it will cost a pretty penny. Not really worth it at that point.

what are the stats on the GTP? does it have the supercharged 3.8? i know GTs are slow and GTPs are faster but how much faster?

(this is for the pontiac man ;-) )

I ain't the Ponitac man, but I do know that the GTP has the supercharged 3.8 and it a little faster than an R/T. It ain't no Viper or Corvette, but it's pretty darn quick. As for the exact stats, I'm not sure. I do know it has 240hp.

the GTP is a full second faster in the 1/4 mile when it's stock, and can be easily modified to run low 14's, and even 13's with alot of mods. An un-modified GTP on the highway isnt any faster than an R/T, but then again, now that 2KWK4U is modified he kicks my butt on the highway too. The GTP's just have way too much torque off the line, we can't touch 'em.

Agreed, i have personally seen a GTP run a high 14 at the track with light modifications. Don't ask me to elaborate cause that's all I could get the guy to tell me. I just met him and he wasn't ready to "share" :p But the GTP is no where near as nice looking and feelin as the Trep R/Ts, it just has more kick in the pants power. Dodge is all about design and GM is all about the motor.

this brings up another question - how fast can a stock r/t run a 1/4?

The GTP is factory rated at 240HP/280TQ at the crank. It's the same old pushrod 3800 V6 that's been around for ages, and it's bulletproof. The supercharger provides a nice broad torque curve, and that's where its advantage is on low end acceleration. Also, for as little as 60 bucks, a smaller pulley can be thrown on the s/c for an additional 3-3.5 PSI of boost netting another 30HP at the wheels and additional torque to go along with it. Stock 1/4 mile times vary from 15.2xx to 14.3xx (very few). I have a factory freak that ran 14.4's consistantly in stock form. As for "alot of mods" to get into 13's, I only have a pulley and exhaust work done as power adders, but I fully expect to run 13's once I get back to a track that I can hook up on! It's either that or I'll wind up getting a smaller pulley and fuel pressure regulator to run 13's here (spinning for 1/8 mile). Or maybe just the Limited slip differential that's coming soon, or the cam that's in the works. That's another thing about GTP's... aftermarket!

As for styling, that's a matter of opinion. You all obviously chose Intrepids for your own reasons, and I respect that. I'm not about to get into a flame war on a Dodge board about who builds better widgets!

Bboucher's stock R/T ran right about 16.00 stock before it loosened up. Now with a few thousand miles on it, I believe his best is a 15.65 and his best trap speed is 90.0MPH. As far as I know, he's the only one with LEGITIMATE times. All you G-Tech'ers need to get out to a strip and let us see some time slips!
