Custom Column Shifter?

After having my '02 Intrepid stolen, I finally ended up buying another, an '00 model. The switch to a column shifter, however, was unexpected. Yet i don't want to do a floor mod.

I'd much rather find a shorter lever, maybe with a leather-wrapped handle to go with the other interior work I am doing. However, I have no idea where to begin looking. I've tried searching the forums and google for terms like column shifter, shift lever, etc., and 99% of every result has to do with replacing the cable.

Has anyone modified/replaced one of these shifters with a custom solution? Where should I look?

I appreciate the help.

Edit (for clarification): I want to change the column shifter/leather. As in, maybe shorter, straighter, with a leather grip, etc.

I don't think a floor mod is needed to add a console shift. Just a complete set of parts. Including seats of course.

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding!
I want to change the column shifter, the lever, to something else that looks less bland. Instead of the angled version, for instance, perhaps a straight one with a leather handle/grip at the end.

I mentioned the floor mod as something I didn't want to do, because everything I could find about the column shifter on these forums was about modding /into/ a floor shifter.

I think, you have a first here, I dont know of any other shift levers that may work, you might want to make a trip to a yard and look around, you may find something,,, may have to mod it a bit to make it work..

Ahh...

I did find this on the forum:
dodgeintrepid.net/showthread.php?t=26169

It shows a custom lever and shifter knob for the column. It says he got it at Pep Boys, but I couldn't find any listing. At least I know such things exist.

If anyone has anything to add, please do. I appreciate the help so far.

Why?

Column shifter can't do autostick (unless you get a putstick), bench seats are far less comfortable, and having a center console is nice.

The only benefit to a column shifter that I can think of is road head with a bench seat, or a six seat car to cram in your kids like illegal immigrants going to work.

Honestly, I'd probably never use the extra front seat but it'd be nice to have it just in case. The seats look pretty identical except they're wider and it does come with a center console doesn't it? It folds back and acts as the seat. I think some even have cup holders. I'm really considering this mod.

I've gotten used to having a column shifter.

Admittedly I am not trying to add one, however. I just want to change the one that comes with it. Either having the lever a different shape or a different knob at the end like in the link earlier.

They still make cars with them, but they tend to be luxury cars. That's why I am sticking with it.

Road head? I've never heard that term. Is that a typo, or, using my imagination, is it what I think it is?

EDIT: Oh my! I just googled it. Not a typo.

Check out some mini truck suppliers, a lot (re: 99% of trucks) are column shift, may be able to find something aftermarket that may be able to work there
