New struts

OK, I decided to NOT have the dealer install new stock struts.

I just purchased the H & R springs and an alignment kit and will buy new struts this week. I am looking at the KYB's. What else is available? I have been unable to find a part number for the Tokiko's. I am also ordering new sway bar bushings as well as new KYB strut mounts and boots. I have heard about the upper strut bearings...do these come with either the struts or the mounts, or is this something else to buy?

What else do you recommend for my 2000 Intrepid RT?

thanks!

For the R/T, you are basically stuck with the KYB (which really isn't a bad thing). Unless they just became available, Monroe only has them available for the rear of the R/T (because they are the same for the other trim levels). I only found KYB to offer them for the front. But I could have missed something out there. I really only checked the big brand names.

I think the KYB struts make a good match for the H&R Springs (that is what I have).

Use stock struts

I researched new struts for my R/T (Gone almost a year now ) and what I found is that the factory strut is the way to go. The KYB's are the same (Stock #) for all intrepids (This may have changed as this was over a year ago)

The OEM strut is made by Tokico (sp) and when I replaced mine the ride was firm but not abusive.

The KYB's are a rough ride for sure. Can't compare them to my wife as it is usually me doing the abusing.

The KYB's specifically state they are not for the Performance Suspension. What gives? Are the stock struts really our only alternative?

Where do you see that? When I look for struts on Tire Rack, the KYBs are listed. When I go directly to the KYB website, they list ALL. I don't see anything about "not for the performance suspension".

I have searched a dozen different sites for struts tonight. Several make that statement.

I am curious, are the stock 2000 Intrepid RT struts the same as the stock 300M struts? Is that the standard 300M strut or the Performance Handling Package struts?

I called Jeff at Hendrick Dodge (got the info from the buy/sell forum) and discussed suspension options available from Dodge. He explained that there are actually 4 levels of suspension components available for our cars...touring, sport touring, performance and sport, with the sport suspension being the best handling but definitely very stiff. He said the RT's came stock with the performance setup. He was very helpful throughout the conversation.

So I ordered the sport setup...front and rear struts (he was unsure of manufacturer), front and rear strut mounts, front strut bearings, sway bar bushings, upper and lower sub frame bushings, outer tie rod bushing kit and rack & pinion bushing kit. While I do not think it would be fair to divuldge prices without his permission, I can safely say the ENTIRE package was $250 less than the estimate from my local Dodge dealer to replace ONLY the front struts and the sway bar bushings (no mounts or anything else)!

I expect delivery late next week and hope to have this plus the H&R springs installed the following weekend. I will provide info on the results after completion.

I may also consider new tires...right now I am running Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 225-55/15. Perhaps a wider tire with a lower profile will be next!
