Question Easiest mods for a stock 1999 2.7 Trep?

Hi folks,

First post, new member. I've owned a 1999 stock Trep 2.7 for a few years now - it's been a great car. I'm very broken hearted that they have stopped making them.

I am not looking to add any fancy turbo's or replace the exhaust system on this, but I would like to boost it's gas mileage and overall performance as much as possible. I don't see too many threads on this forum about improving the 2.7 (perhaps I'm not looking hard enough).

What would you folks recommend I do to improve gas mileage and help this 2.7 run more efficiently, without major engine mods? I am a novice at engine work, but I would retrofit parts outside the engine if need be. Please include links if you have them.

Also, any tips on quick and easy interior additions to reduce road noise? It's already pretty quiet but I'd love to make it quieter.

Thanks in advance,

JP

You can use K&N type air filters, and make sure you remove any restrictive areas in the intake side of the engine (I am not too familure about the 2.7L) and changing out the rear mufflers/resonators. Change to a synthic motor oil, if you haven't already.
Things like dyno mat, (I used roofing elastromeric material) will help deaden the sound, I also used expansion foam, and spray under coating. http://public.fotki.com/300M/300m_ne...ening_changes/ sorry not all the pictures are up yet.

K&N FIPK will be one of the best things you can do, but exhaust helps with the mileage too, provided you keep your foot out of the throttle.

One of the biggest contributors to noise on our cars is tires. Unless you just absolutely have to have bleeding edge road grip, go with a good touring tire. I was amazed at how quiet my Concorde became after getting rid of so-called "hi performance" tires and switching to the Cooper touring tires I have now. They have a 620 wear rating, and are living up to that. Great hydroplaning resistance, and, like I said, super quiet. Around $80 each.

Gas saving tips = new spark plugs, new pcv valve, new air filter, and exhaust. And check your tire pressure!

Thanks, guys!

I've replaced the PCV valve, and just had new 17" rims and tires put on it. AT Italia rims - they really look good.

Here's some follow up questions:

- What are the best spark plugs to get?
- Where can I buy this air filter people are raving about?
- Are there any other easy mods to the intake system to inprove combustion?
- I'm taking it to a garage soon - other than cleaning the injectors, is there anything they can do from a tuning standpoint to improve the engine? I get bad knocks and no power when I use anything less than premium gas.

Thanks, folks - you've been a new inspiration for me to start improving my "rig"

I among others here are currently using Bosch plugs. Though some swear by Champions. That is entirely your call.
The J-intake comes from a member here Joekd. Contact him for more details. And for the K&N contact 340duster.

Improve gas mileage? My 2.7 can get 30 mpg on the highway if I take it easy and keep it just under 65mph....that's on 87 octane. Our cars actually get better mileage than a PT Crusier with a 4 banger. Not bad for such a big car.....
