That makes sense to me, especially if you take their theory into account, it only seems logical to assume the closer you mounted this type of muffler to the engine then the better it'd work.
My first plan for a system was just about like the first one you described D76G12. I have a Flowmaster 2 into 1 "Y" pipe left over from another project, 2 - 2.5" pipes into one 3", and I also have one of their smooth transition cones left over from the same project, it goes from 3" down to 2.5". My plan was to mount the "Y" pipe where the front resonator attaches to the manifold downpipes. Then install the AT 3030, then add the transition cone directly onto that to bring it down to a 2.5" diameter system. From there, I was thinking it'd be nice to split off right behind the muffler to run dual pipes all the way back, but as an additional measure to get the right sound, incorporate either a set of Aero Turbine resonators to get that low throaty rumble that so many of us seem to want. Of course, if you like the higher pitched raspy sound, then you don't need to add the resonators.
