Smile Cop Wheels

Got my Intrepid cop wheels the other day. Degreased and light sanded them, then applied the first coat of industrial gloss black today. Here's how they look so far. A few more sanding / painting cycles and they'll be done, the original paint was actually pretty good and since I could not find a black primer, I used the factory paint as the base.

Ordered my aluminum trim rings and they are enroute. Looking for alternatives to the little chrome center hubs that come with cop cars, would like a wannabe' Motorsport look with the SXT lugs but I have to find something to cover the axles.

Will post a pic when I'm done.

Gonna' stick with the black for contrast and scratch resistance. Besides, if I had white wheels I'd have to clean the brake dust and dirt off them all the time, so consider laziness as a factor in deciding to keep them black! :icon_smil

Did you get them off of a website or somewhere?

Got them from another DI.net member who owns an Intrepid police special and was getting different wheels. The trim rings that are specially designed for the Intrepid police rims I ordered from here:

Or, you just wait till the cop sits down at the donut shop and get to work quickly...

Nice wheels there eltee. Get the center cap as well and people'll start slowing down for ya. You got'em from someone on here you said? As far as I know there're only 3 of us here with police packages, one is a railway cop, so I'm guessing you got those wheels from the other member who bough his car with the lightbar and pushbumper in the front?

To be honest I think I'll get rid of mine too in the near future, they're kinda of heavy for me.

How heavy are those wheels? 25 lbs or so.

Atleast 30lbs each. Mine weights well over 50 lbs with tires on.

Yes, they are pretty heavy. I didn't buy them to save weight, I like the look with the aluminum trim ring. I am looking for an alternative for the somewhat Spartan looking chrome center caps, but will settle if I can't do something else.

Photo from website where I ordered the trim rings:

I want to stash my nice chromeys so that I won't need to worry about the dreaded Gen II chrome wheel rust problem and to give my car a lower profile appearance (stealth wise, not height wise). Although I live in the 'burbs, I work and do alot of stuff in the big city where vandalism and car/car parts theft is common so by presenting a somewhat Plain Jane look my car will be less tempting.

What kind of tire/size?
I just reweighed the spare, 48lbs 225/60 16 eagle GA on factory 16x7 steelie.
I hope the total weight is <53lbs.

and I thought the stock 15x6 were heavy at 21 lbs.

The police "safety" wheels should be thicker than a standard steel wheel. The tires are Eagle RS-A, 225 / 60 / 16. I'll re-weight the spare when I get a chance, but the general feel is "really heavy". They weight about the same as my truck's 31" tires + steel rims.

A light weight 16" rim (15 lbs or so) plus a 50 series tire should help my performance a bit. a 225 / 50 tire and 3.89 gears will yield a 14% shorter overall ratio.

eltee, those wheels are looking sweet!
Did you happen to buy those from someone in Rancho Cucamonga? I forget his name, either Dave, or Mike I think.

And what part of CA are you in? I'm in the OC.

Got my wheels from someone out of state. I'm up in the Bay Area but I get to the OC alot for DLand and family. I went to college in LA and worked as a cop down there for a while (inc. patrol on Catalina Island).

I plan to use the chrome lugs from my factory chrome wheels, but need something to cover the centers so I'm not looking at axle ends. Something silvery (polished, matte, chrome, stainless) preferred but even black is OK so long as I can cover over the axle ends. Any ideas?
