Just got offered a 3.5L H.O., from a rental car!,

Is this a bad idea to go with a rental car's engine?, this is from a 20004 CONCORDE LXI w/ 3.5L H.O., anyone suggest anything?, the true miles are unknown, and this engine has been sitting for 4 years in the warehouse, wire butchered and all(my engine harness is going to be used anyway!) wachu guys think about this?, Since Im putting in a motor and going to be using the mobil-1 full sinthetic oil, should I replace the oilpan gasket rite then and there?, even if its not leaking?, since htese pans area bitch to remove while the engine is in the car, and what other gaskets should be changed no matter what?, I know that the plenum gasket have to discarded and replaced brand new, how about valve covers, spark plug tube seals, etc..?

Any help would be great!, ;)

ThankS!

It is a 2004 engine that was stored for 4 years? How that come?

Stored for 4 years = dried/cracked seals...probable rust on the internals...who knows what the oil looks like... If it was a free motor, I'd take it...and do a complete rebuild. But that's just me...

Let me ask you a question, WHY would you want an engine that has been taken out of a RENTAL car. Everyone knows that rental cars get the most abuse out of any other car, and they usually are extremely poorly maintained i.e. oil changes way overdue etc...

On top of that they want 750.00 for it. I would much rather spend a few hundred dollars extra and get one from a reputable company. Does it even come with any warranty?

As per one of my previous posts

As far as vin's go, I don't know. If I were you, I would get the one with a little more miles on it rather than the rental one.

One of two things happened here. the car itself went to shit, or the engine went to shit. maybe the car was totalled and the engine was salvaged. But parked in a warehouse for a length of time is not the greatest for seals. Just as in2deep pointed out, they tend to dry and crack over time. maybe its a decent motor but it would benefit from getting the seals checked out at the very least.

Now the flip side, it could be that the engine went to shit and the car is still out there with a different motor. But if that were the case, a carfax should be able to tell you if its be re-registered and such. And why would anybody keep a junked motor in a warehouse anyway?

That pretty much sums it up. However, when I was looking for a new motor for my car, there are many warehouses that have an engine that has a problem or problems with it and are selling them for roughly 500 - 750. Also, Carfax doen't always have ALL that kind of info. A lot of places that do engine swaps don't register the new vin's.

I asked them the same thing, why they would keep a bad motor and sell it for that much. Was told many shops will pick them up and not tell customers. Pretty shady world out there.
