First Mod? - K&N

Getting my paycheck, and I was looking at my first upgrade (still paying her off so I can't do much more in terms of spending-wise than a K&N regardless), which would be the K&N.

I was looking at purchasing from the following site:

http://www.truckstuffusa.com/filairfilbyk4.html

Either way, I wanted to know what in terms of reality this thing'll actually do. Does it actually increase acceleration, and what about mpg -- when I'm not gunning it does it add as well?

I'm a little iffy about that site, because it lists the Intrepid 3.5L, and since I'm using the R/T that'd be the obvious choice. But I'm concerned whether or not since it was cancelled in '02 if the 3.5L is actually referring to the SXT varian -- are they the same engine?

EDIT: It says the 00-01 R/T on there (just double-checked), but says the "R/T 3.5L 00-01 fuel injected V6" -- since when was the R/T engine fuel injected?

Since forever - haha
- sorry

People say it sounds cool, they "feel" faster. K&N's own website claims like 8 hp gain but way up at like 5000 rpm where we don't run that much.

Your link was to the K&N reusable version of your stock air filter that goes inside your stock airbox. $60 some odd dollars

Here is a link to the fipk2 page:
http://truckstuffusa.stores.yahoo.net/fuelinperkit.html
the K&N part number for 3 Liter engines is 57-1522 for the FIPK2 which is the whole replacement tube and cone filter. They have it for $244. I have found it recently for $190 elsewhere and for $170-ish a year or so ago.

Hasen't fuel injection been around since the ass end of the 1970's?

You can also message JoeKD for a custom intake. He charges $200, shipping extra, which is cheap...From CT to SC, it's 15 for me.

If its just the drop in filter, don't expect much at all. You'll get better filtration, and supposedly ~5HP, but when I had one I couldn't feel it. I just recently upgraded to the FIPK kit, which replaces all the stock intake tubing, and man the difference is like night and day. You can hear your engine really growl under hard acceleration. I don't know if this was a fluke or what, but the other day I had it to the floor in autostick and chirped the tires when I shifted into second. Never did that before!

first off, are you wanting a "full kit" or just the filter. there are better prices out there, you just have to look for them. i got the full kit from k&n (intake pipe, cone filter) and, at least my highway driving mpg, went up by 50+ miles per tank. if you just get the filter, search the site as someone modified there stock intake box to help the efficiency even more.

Cheaper doesn't always mean better.
With my 3.3, I spent around $200 total for the true CAI. Stainless intake pipe, cone filter for that, and 4 other small cone filters for the throttle body outlets. With that, It wasn't hard to notice the changes. It took off like a bat out of hell, the hollow hiss sound, was fucken-A. With that and a few other simple mods, I did increase the mileage by an insane amount.

Personally, get a full kit, the accordian tube can decrease airflow with all the ribs.

Right now i am running the same Spectre aluminum intake from Autozone that i had on my 1st gen. Fits just fine and even points towards the fender opening for fresh air.
You can pick those up for $40 or so and grab a K&N cone filter to fit the pipe. You can pretty much go as big as you want, depending on what you wanna spend. I also added a heat shield to keep the filter and piping a little cooler.
Pics on my cardomain site if needed.

Well for some, Weapon R sounds kinda ricey. But that weapon R looks no different than buying a civic intake pipe and throwing a cone filter on it which can be done far cheaper than $200. It doesn't look like a full replacement unit - maybe replaces all of the accordian tubing.

I know what you mean about the chirp into 2nd! It never happened until I added the JoeKD intake..... The throttle response is LOTS better! Its funny when people who haven't driven your car in months know something is improved! My friend liked it so much, the modding bug bit him....

Get the intake sound box out too!

The "box" part between the accordion tubing and the throttle body is also quite restrictive, get it out! It's SOLE purpose is to act as a muffler...... the sound is so nice now

I can't be happier with the Kit I got from JoeKD. Last time I checked, it was cheaper than the K&N FIPK.

I cant wait till I get the HO plenum, even more power.... I hear the short runners sound MEAN Can you HO guys confirm this?

Crap. After reading that I have just put a FIPK on the top of the list.... hmm.... The LHS is mighty quick from a stop to 60+ (especially when some ass is trying to stay with you) but I could imagine some more pep with the intake on....
