300m Special wheel Dress up

Well I finally went and got some new tires for the 18"s I got last year at the Kyle Memorial meet.

As I brought them out I realized how dinged up they are, so I had them mount and balance the new tires and then brought them home.

They look good from about 10ft (like the rest of my car)

closer inspection reveals the the carnage:

So I took the palm sander to them. Very easy to clean up all that damage, then took some 220grit to the rest of them, hosed them out and hit them with some degreeser and a tack cloth.

two coats primer:

looking better already! I'm a bit nervous, as I was feeling around the primer I found a few loose sections, especially around the bead. Not sure if I got all the grease off.

But away we go anyway with some rustoleum silver sparkle wheel paint. this stuff goes on light but holds really good! Has a TON of clear in it, ,and seems to make an extremely hard surface.

mo beddah:

Most of the damage is hidden very well:

One of the worst areas that I didnt want to dig to far into. Still looks ok.

Also picked up these goofy billet caps at Meijer... meh.

So we'll see, after setting for about an hour they are holding up fine to a light finger nail and a tack cloth, I'll report back after they look after mounting and a zillion miles down to NC and back. I'm not convinced it will last. Hoping once that wheel paint firms up it makes a good hard shell.

Noice!

I'll check them out at the Cinco de Mopar meet! Curious as to how well the rattle can paint will hold up.

I've got 2 of 4 OEM 18" wheels left on mine that have major flaking! If yours hold up I might try the same.

Are those caps aluminum? Danger! They'll glom onto the metal threads of the valve stem and are a *bear* to remove. Ask me how I know.

Give 'em a quick loosen/tighten once a month and you'll be fine, I reckon. Even if they never see winter. I'm paranoid like that, see.

In other news - those rimz look great!

Nice! My special rims are pretty dinged too! What kind of paints did you use? This is something I need to look into!

I have valve stem caps that look almost identical on the Ricer. They have rubber inserts so it's not metal-to-metal on the valve stem.

Looks good, can't wait to see em mounted.

Also, You could have used some JB weld to fill in the deep scrapes.

checked my caps this morning, they have rubber inserts. Good looking out though! Paint seems to be adhering good this morning, but is still pretty soft. Hopefully a few heat cycles hardens them up a bit. Honestly, I have low expectations for durability. We shall see. I can always plastidip em if it doesn't hold up.

I can hardly wait to see them. I have some non-LH wheels that need a little something. They're down-right homely looking now.

Just do some some heavy downhill running while dragging the brakes.....that'll heat cure them!

They do look good. I'll have to head to the auto parts store to pick up a can or two if this ends up working out for you.

Did you use regular Gray "Body" Primer?
