Installing airbag seats

Is it possible to enable the side seat airbags (2002 seats) in a 99 ES Trep without them? In the end it's not a big deal if they can't (a set of these seats are hard enough just to find in my neck of the woods, let alone a set worth putting in my car), but added safety is always welcome...

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this has been done before. With wiring diagrams and an airbag midule from a car equipped with side airbags you could probably do it.

It will not work without a whole electrical re-wire. You would need to add the side crash sensors, add wires to the seats and add the correct control unit. Then this would also cause an issue with the PCM/BCM since side airbags where added in 2001. The 99 PCM wont know what is there and put the air bag control unit into default and turn the whole system off front bags included. Alot of time, effort, and money would be needed to make this work... and even then it may not work properly.

You would need a whole new body harness (splicing probably wouldn't be a smart idea for an airbag system)

ACU (airbag control unit)
sensor
seats
BCM

And you never know if the BCM would properly "talk" to your current PCM...

Alot of work is needed and not worth messing with your existing safety system.

It looks like there's seperate side impact airbag control modules for the left and right sides. They're located under the plastic covers on the B pillars(the ones that have the seatbelt anchors on them). So with a 1999 car and not a 2001+..might be much more trouble than it's worth. On the plus side you could always swap out the seat backs for standard M ones without side airbags and sell the airbag ones for a tidy profit. You're only looking at two connectors in the backs of airbag equipped seats..one for the heater and one for the airbag. Just remove the seat recliner and pivot bolts and swap them. More details coming in a PM as I get them.

Yes, it has sensors on the sides to detect a crash on the sides.

Interesting. I was thinking it just had another g sensor in the module for the other direction.
