Smile Winter Modfest 2006!

Oh man am I having FUN! What could be better than leaving for a friend's place just after getting out of class for winter break to do mods on eachother's rides for 10 days?

Well, it is day 3 and here is what has been done to my car:

300M Special rear swaybar
300M Special PCM + SKIM module and ignition lock cylinder

That swaybar is a SWEET upgrade. It feels like a totally different car. It is a FUN ride. The car is much more tossable, the boat feeling is gone with no degredation in ride quality, it's incredible. All that improvement for just $30.

The PCM is an interesting item. First, let me clear up some misconceptions. The BCM stores the odometer data, that still reads correctly. The PCM SKIM reader and key are the only things that need to go together, the BCM is only a data transfer device between the modules. The exception to this is the Police package, where the BCM is also locked to the PCM.

The transmission operates differently with this PCM. It holds gears more agressively and seems to just shift a little better. The HP increase has been minor so far as I don't have the HO plenum on yet. I will put it on tomorrow after I clean it! It is really nasty..... I'm going to need a HUGE can of carb cleaner to clean it.

I still need the transfer sprockets put in. The speedometer will be off without them.

Autostick is on hold for now. The parts did not arrive in time for me to work on them here. Thank US customs for that..... Me and TFC are more than a little mad about the situation. Apparently "used car parts" was an inadequate declaration of contents..... BS!

I'd like to thank TFC for all the good data on this PCM project. Without him, I would have never attempted it. Give him some REP! I'd also like to thank D76G12 for selling me the PCM he got from TFC. I'd also like to think ern for providing the plenum and wiring harness. Oh and thanks to Ryan D for getting me some transfer sprockets.


My friend, ExFirstgen3.5 is working away on his Jetta.

ExFirstgen3.5's Jetta mods:
Eibach springs (1" drop) - 50% complete
Koni FSD shocks and struts - 50% complete
Neuspeed 28mm rear swaybar - done, but needs adjustments
Inlet pipe and downpipe. - not started yet.

We exchange places under our cars, he worked on my swaybar and I helped with the springs. And we have a seemingly unlimited supply of soda and tunes.....

I'll pop in later with updates and PICS! Expect a few how to articles from me.

My Intrepid ES is becoming a beast. I have a LOT of respect for that 300M Special package, even more now that I have some of its parts..... for those that don't know, it is a LOT more than a pretty face. It is a wicked ride. I can't wait to get the suspension done, but that will have to wait for the Spring 2007 Modfest.

I got the HO plenum installed and properly wired in today. Like I mentioned in the previous post, the plenum was pretty nasty so it had to be cleaned, inside and out. That took about an hour. Once it was cleaned, I removed the old non HO plenum and coverend the lower intake manifold with tape to prevent anything from getting into the engine.

Then it got FUN..... The wiring harness I got wasn't quite right for my car and I found out hat I would have to remove the lower intake manifold as well to get it in. The lower intake is a PITA to remove and install, so I grafted the MTV and SRV circuits onto my existing harness from the donor harness. That took a bit of time. The work itself wasn't too hard, tedious and time consuming, but not hard. The thing that took the longest was finding the connector pinouts in the service manual.

After that, I carefully torqued the new plenum down to 12Nm and put it all back together. Depite taking the harness apart and fiddiling with pins in the main ignition harness, it started fine and ran great!

The real test was seeing if the HO plenum doodads did their job. They did quite well, performance is better in the low end and upper RPM performance has improved. The SRV makes a nice sound when open too, a nice subtle higher pitch sound. I need to fine tune my launches.... the tires spin more.

SE transfer sprockets go in tomorrow...... wish me luck, the job looks like a PITA.

I need my speedometer to work right again. 7% off and it reads low...... not good for a leadfoot's wallet. No tickets yet, but I have done all my mischief at night

How hard was the PCM install? I want one too as my speedo reads off :(

Just a small note, the PCM does store the vehicle mileage, but does not transfer it to the BCM/cluster. It is there solely for warranty verification purposes, and can only be read by the scan tool.

Good to see you got it all in and working properly, and that someone has finally got to use that Special PCM I worked so hard to get with all the locks and keys.


The package was heading out of Canada on the 13th according to the tracking - so........

It wasn't too hard. The bolt closest to the wheel well is a bit of a pain though.

SKIM and lock cylinder installation took 5 minutes. No kidding! It was really easy. I'll do the door locks when I put some more dynamat in some noisy spots over spring break.

What was a PAIN was putting in the extra wires for the MTV and SRV. The plenum was fairly easy though, that takes about an hour. The wiring took the longest.

Oh and yeah..... it's QUICK! The Special programming is sweet, it holds gears much more agressively and the HP is great. It does do best with premium fuel, but it worked OK with the 87 octane I had in the tank when I started it.

Smile Sprockets!

The 300M Special transfer sprockets are in. We started on them last night and got the cover back on at around 4:00 am. We just put the crossmember back together this morning. The speedometer now reads correctly, it's right on with my GPS unit.

The acceleration is improved, the seat of the pants feel is very nice.

That dumb kid who challenged me to a drag in a Scion xA is going to get spanked even harder.......

Well, I drove 420 miles today with my mods........ there were only 4 cops today (3 were busy with wrecks), so naturally I had FUN! The passing and merging power is AWESOME, it came in handy with all the traffic around Dallas.

The Autostick stuff from TFC came in today, so more mods tomorrow. Just think..... I'll have Autostick to play with in Austin while I'm visiting my relatives on new years.

My car needs a bath really bad..... 10 days in the country has made it FILTHY. I surprised a few ricers with it though..... after all, if it's covered in dirt it couldn't be that fast........

The biggest thing I notice between my mother's SXT & my old 98 es vs. my current 2002 Special is the throttle response. I find that the special is much quicker to respond to the gas pedal, especially over 2k.

That is the BIG improvement, also, the tranny is MUCH less stingy about downshifts. It holds gears longer as well, which also aids acceleration.

The sound when the short runner valve opens combined with that JoeKD intake is awesome!

Gas mileage has been good. I averaged 24MPG today going mostly uphill and I was hauling major ass. (I got away with a LOT today) If I go easy on level ground, I get about 27-29MPG.
