R/T went to crap...

Hello...
Well, after being in storage for 7 months, i pulled the R/T out and had a complete tune-up. Was running great for about 3 or 4 weeks then all of a sudden, after a casual 40 minute commute to town, the damn thing dies, right in the middle of rush hour, on the highway. Had it towed to a Mechanic, whom i know and trust, he says it is lower end problems. He has not torn into it too much, but says he got it to start for about 30 second to hear a horrible knocking sound.
After looking at prices for a replacement engine and comparing it to rebuilding this one, i am still confused on which route to take, along with not knowing which engines will fit. State law says has to be sames size engine to be legal.

I found a 2002 Intrepid R/T rebuilt engine on eBay for 1900+shipping, which will run a little less than rebuilding this one, but i am not sure if the 2002 3.5 will fit. The photo does not look like the engine i have. Did they change something?
Any suggestions on what i should do?
The car only has 60,000 miles on it, no dents or anything. Would make a good trade in if it ran... lol

The electrical systems are different but the basic block and heads (the meaty mechanicals you need) are the same.

So would it be "too" difficult to change over the electrical system?

You don't need to if you are just taking the mechanical parts of the engine. You may use your existing electronics.

Well, the bill is in. a whopping $4,300.79 to fix the trep :S
Anyone want to buy it for 6 grand as is?? lol
It would be alot less had i lived in the lower 48, but being here in alaska, 2nd hand parts a sparce. I guess ill be looking at 6 grand worth of negative equity into a new ride....
I hate to say it, but i think i am cursed. All of my Red colored dodges have had some kind of Problem.

1997 Dodge Intrepid sport, Red, only 34000 miles, wrecked after owning in for 3 weeks...

1996 Dodge Stratus ES, Red., have owned since October '06, only 80k miles, 1st day of owning, replaced complete ABS system, Coolant system, and Heating unti...

Now,
2000 Intrepid R/T, also red, complete engine destroyed. Unkown cause, cant be fixed. Needs replacment engine.

It is enough to avoid Dodges, expecially Red ones for the rest of my life.....

Hmmm...... are you SURE it couldn't be rebuilt? If it seized due to sitting, the block may need honing and the mechanicals may need to be machined or replaced but that should cost 2500 or so.......

A used engine from any 2nd gen (1998 and up) 3.5 will work. Even the non high output blocks and heads will work, what makes the 3.5 a "High Output" is the upper intake manifold and the programming.

This means you may take an engine from the following cars:
300M, Intrepid ES (2002-2004 ONLY), Concorde LXi (2002-2004 ONLY), Concorde Limited, and the LHS.

That's a lot of wrecks to chose from..... Find yourself a junkyard 3.5!

2004 300M Special...257K miles. Original powertrain!

Oh, my if you weren't so damn far away!! Are you still willing to do a used engine? If so let me search the east coast a few days and see what shipping would be. That body is a great keeper.
