Hypothetical Question...

Say someone wanted to take a modified ECM from say, a 1999 300M, and install it into a 2001 LHS. If you got the VIN's changed in the ECM, what would not allow the 99 ECM to control the 01 motor? Even if they aren't the same code motor (they are both 3.5 HO's)

My theory is that it will work....if you change the VIN, and it matched the BCM, that should allow it to work. I think it is like the TCM's (from 99-01) they are interchangable...

Any thoughts??

I'd think your only issue would be a SKIM related one - key incompatability.
So you'd need to "tape-the-key" or use the key and SKIM from the donor car rhe ECM is from.
Only other issue could be a pin-out compatability - as long as all of the circuits on both vehicle ECM plugs are the same, can't see a reason (theoretically) the ECM wouldn't control the engine.

I had an ECM I got out of a junkyard reprogrammed out of my car. I dropped it off at a dealer, and picked it back up an hour later. All they needed was the VIN...once they had that, they programed it, and that was that. I think the VIN is shared across the bus between the ECM, and SKIM. When the ECM was being programmed, it had no idea that the SKIM was in the car...so I honestly think that changing the VIN will allow it to work on any car so equipped.

That's good to know, because it is pretty much opposed to what the FSM seems to indicate; though I have found that a lot of what it says is not necessarily 100% correct.
In all probability, it is the factory's policies, so that there is no possibility of liability or lawsuits reflected directly back to them for changes made by a dealer/mechanic and not done according to the book.
Now, we just need someone with the "balls" to test out these theories
