Introducing in picture my R/T
Did the brakes recently as the pads where worn and disc where so so.
Only downpoint : burnt paint on the roof and trunk, leather seat dry with stitching ripping. Also the top of the leather on the rear seat is discolored to the sun.
Bought with 28390 miles for $3000.
Got a K&N drop in filter, and will do a transmission oil and filter change as soon as I have time.
Audio will be change at some point, even if everything still work fine, I like would a bit of recent system and more quality speakers
Here are picture of the window sticker.
I got lucky for sure. I was on the market for a used car, and i missed opportunity on differents make/model.
When the Intrepid pop on Craiglist, ads was 15 minuted old. I called the guy and make my purchase fast.
I was in the US under a J-1 visa, and I used to rent a 300M from the rental company at the resort I was working. I liked the handling of the car and the look. As the Intrepid are the same (for a few things), I am in known territory.
I really enjoy that car.
Doing some sound deadning in the trunk in prevision of the future audio system.
Also did the Big 3 upgrade.
Next step second battery in the trunk. I found very nice info on this forum to pass the positive cable through the firewall. (that's why I love forum better than FB group. A lot of usefull info.)
Already have an Optima in the battery spot, and the second will also be an Optima (I had 2 around that are not very old)
30700 miles now.
Did an oil change with Mobil 1 and extra size filter M301 (thanks to the info on the forum).
As I didn t had any info, I also did a transmission oil change and filter change.
All run smoother and eliminate some vibration at idle. New double platinum spark plug also. (NGK, forum taugh me Dodge doesnt like Bosch).
Bad news, my transmission failed. Sort of lucky, fail a miles from home and was able to crawl there.
Got the car towed to aamco. And bad news came today. Fluid is clear but lots of brass in it. So, I need a rebuild on it. Only 31130 miles. A bit disappointed, but that s life.
Sometimes old cars with low miles are just as problematic as newer cars with high miles.
It may have 31K miles, but that transmission is still 17 going on 18 years old. Seals still dry up, clutch material weakens, and water contamination from condensation happens over time; especially the less they are driven.
Noise pump noise from the torque convecter. No limp mode at first, weird shifting first, then noise, and then limp mode. Sometime, nothing and back in limp mode.
In the end, all will be changed in the transmission as everything got contaminated / damaged due ti the brass particle and pieces.
So big bill ahead, but new transmission.
That's a shame. Very nice car regardless. I'm soon going to be replacing a transmission in my RT due to some contamination...Just waiting for it to actually go before i do it.
Got a problem monday going back home. A hose for the transmission intercoolant got loose and I lost fluid, with smoke etc...
Went back to aamco and they fix it , check and test drive.
More adventure, got the Trep back today.
Last week got overheating issues, and coolant spilling from the cap. And the more I poured coolant, the more got out.
Turn out my thermostat gave up. Also done a suspension job, but it seems the car sit higher now. At least, I feel the difference.
I hope it s the end of bad surprise.
For the moment it s low mileage but lots of expensive surprise. :S
So far no more problem, thank God. Ok beside shredding a sidewall on a curb to avoid an asshole driving in the middle of the road without carring.
I m not very active as I m very busy with work as one of my guy is on vacation. So I l filling gap in schedule.
Got the Intrepid some window tint yesterday. Ready for SoCal summer.
20% rear and back, 50% front, visor and sunroof 5%. Yeah, I tinted more the sunroof as I m bald and I want to enjoy the sunroof on vent positions without sunburn on my head (yes it has happen before).
I want to put a nice exhaust, but looks like it needs to be custom made. I ll see later, it s not a priority. I would like it respray and leather redone inside.
The 2002 R/T had the best ride/handling overall of all the LH Line. More compliant than the Special suspension and handles just as well. I can vouch for that as I had a 2002 R/T and currently have a 2002 300m Special.
Also change the stock unit and system for something more punchy. Even if it was still working fine, it needed an upgrade.
Headunit is now a Pioneer DEH-S7200BHS.
All go to a 5 channel amplifier, Pioneer GM-DX975 optimized for Hi-Res Audio. 4x75W + 1x350W in 4 Ohm.
Up front, 2 way component Pioneer TS-Z65CH, optimized for Hi-Res Audio as well. Tweeter are in place of the sail speaker. Stealth install. I have used the stock speaker wires to feed the speaker s from the crossover.
In the back, 2 way component again, Pioneer TS-D69C. Tweeter was integrated in the pillar. It gives a better audio rendering.
Subwoofer is a Pioneer TS-SWX3002, 12" sub.
Also the front doors have been sound proofed, and the rear deck and trunk has also been sound proof.
Second battery in the trunk, an optima bluetop that I had around and another bluetop upfront (I had 2 spare optima). And a big 3 upgrade under the hood.
36000 miles passed today. Riding smooth and strong.
With the begining of the stay at home in L.A., I hit 130mph at the GPS a few time (before CHP start being on the lookout). I love that car.
Definitely need an exhaust system for more oomph. Otherwise, a great daily.
Need to check my AC, got noise sometimes when using it (especially when reving or turning it on)
Can you post a video with the a.c. noise? We might be able to diagnose it from that. Could be the compressor on its way out, but again we could tell one way or other from hearing it. Has a.c. been recharged a few times? If so, may be low in oil unless some was added along with the R134a.
Difficult for the video as it s usually as I l driving.
Sound is like a slipping belt. And sometimes, feels like engine loss power as it need to pull harder as like a pully is stuck.
When I bought it, seller told me he got it refilled not long before. Don't know if he did a full ac change or just one of those refill can.
If compressor is going out, that could explain the slipping belt and perceived loss of power.
If perhaps the belt noise is real and the power loss is the normal compressor load but you're noticing it now only because the noise is making you pay more attention, than consider the following:
• Loose or old, slick, worn, or contaminated belt.
• A.C. belt tensioner pulley bearing is dry/bad (possibly loading belt).
• If the a.c. belt is slightly loose, the 3.2/3.5 has a peculiarity of the belt making a strange noise only for a second or two while accelerating as the engine passes between around 13k and 18k rpm. You can't duplicate this noise sitting still - you have to be on the road in gear with the engine speeding up loaded by the car. If this is the problem, simply tightening the belt a bit more will fix it. The belts need to be a little tighter than many people think they should be. The accessory bearings are made to take the slightly higher tension. Proper tension is 1/4 to 3/8" deflection from moderate thumb pressure in center span of the belt.
I posted a you tube video of what the compressor sounds like if it's getting ready to seize up or self destruct (due to low oil or just wear). I'll find that and post it here. IF that's the problem, you should be able to duplicate the compressor noise with the car parked. If you can't duplicate it with the a.c. on, temperature on max. cold, cabin fan on high, and rev'ing the engine, then the compressor is probably not the problem, but I would at least prove to yourself whether you can or cannot create the noise (that you'll hear in my video) with it parked to rule it in or out.
