Dissembled the overhead unit... and sanded the housing with some 220 grit sandpaper..

...it was then cleaned and wiped free of any grease and dirt. Once dried I sprayed on some adhesion promoter...then a few coats of gray filler primer. Let that dry a few hours. Then wet sand it with some 400 grit sandpaper...

...wiped it again with degreaser.. then sprayed 1 light coat of matte paint ...then 3-4 more wet coats ...with 5 minutes between each.

...45min later... I sprayed on about 6 coats of clear...following the same guidelines. I was already glossy...and smooth..since I'm so good with my paint technique ;-D

...To give it that mirror finish. I let the paint cure for 3 days... then wetsanded the clear coat with some 1200, then 1500, then 2000, then 2500 grits paper.

...the paint was dull again. To bring back the shine... you use some buffing/rubbing compound (I used Turtle Wax) for that. Spread on an even coat...then use a soft fiber towel to buff it vigorously... then wipe clean.

You can see the difference...in the pic

I added some wax on it afterward

...All done.

Do you see the shine of that biaaatch!

Damn I'm good!

Wendel that looks great, but one thing. Don't you have to let paint off gas for quite some time before you put any wax on it?

Yeah that's what they say. I only follow that rule when using actual car paint...and not spray can stuff. I usually wait up to 7 days only, with interior pieces.

Then again, I rarely use wax on interior pieces.

I'm pretty certain that the gas will permeate the wax anyway...just takes longer.

My old steering wheel/cover...

Torn and damaged wood wheel I had laying around. I sanded the wood section and prepped it for paint.

I originally wanted the wood grain to show thru. So instead of spend countless hours removing the factory varnish...and stain the wood veneer. I just spayed it with 2 coats of Niteshades tail light tint.

I changed my mind on the whole "tinted wood" idea, because it would be out of place IMO...since everything else is solid black. SO that's what I did.

I used a 2 part autograde clear coat (PPG). Spray paint wouldn't hold up to continuous traffic. The clear layed down PERFECT and I don't even need to wetsand/buff it. No orange peel.

Restitched some good leather unto the wheel.

Small gap between the new wheel and the new leather. I coulda lived with it.

Small piece of flexible 1/8 chrome strip

Measuring the strip to fit. Will look great with my chrome shifter.

Leather was trimmed, so the strip would sit flush. Then it was glued into place.

removing the steering wheels

Finished...

Just need to clean/condition the leather a bit.

Wow Wendell, what an awesom job! You need to be starting a buisiness doing this. Can I be your first customer??

Did you say what the finish was you used on the wood??
Never mind. I see it. I agree, a rattlecan grade paint would never hold up.
The chrome trim looks perfect!

Thanks Duds, means a lot. I do some work on the side. Doing a couple fiberglass pods for someone as we speak. When I get a job at an actual shop, I'll be doing more side work. It took me about 40 min, just to put the little chrome strips. I wanted a nice fit and finish.
