I broke down and done it finallyy

New water pump and timing belt is now done. I waited til 135k; I figure there's a 50% safety factor built into the recommended interval. The old belt and pump looked and worked just fine but it's changed and now no longer a worry for years to come.

I also added a lower rad hose heater for winter and installed new hoses.






And as always I made a helluva mess in the process.


It took me 90 minutes to get to the belt and pump and another 4 hours to reassemble... it was HOT and MUGGY so took some extra time.

Also, does anyone know where the how-to went for this? I could swear there used to be one. It would have been handy to know the torque specs; my crappy Chilton's book forgot to include those. So... yeah, nothing got torqued to the correct specs, but I think it will be ok; I didn't over-tighten anything. If I were working on someone else's car I would go by the book, but my own stuff I don't worry as much.

Also, to answer some questions I've seen asked the last few days -

1. No, you don't need a cam lock to do this job.

2. Yes, you will need a harmonic balancer puller designed for Chrysler.

3. To install the harmonic balancer you can carefully tap it with a hammer to get it on far enough to get the bolt started. I used an impact to and did not torque it to the recommended 125lb pounds. It'll be fine.

Good job! As for the how-to, I used this one from LHforums.

Also, it is possible to do the job without removing the harmonic balancer (I didn't remove it). Bolts for the timing cover can be reached through the spokes. Same with the tensioner pulley bolt. To install the new timing belt, you pull some slack in between the spokes of the harmonic balancer and you can route it into place. It took me a while to get it right (I practiced with the old one), but once I got the technique down, I easily put the new belt on.
As for torque specs, I had the FSM on the laptop out there with me.

Well, I got one more to do. My older brother's 01 300m with 140k is past due also... not to be confused with my little brother Brandon (bh1992). Thanks for the info!

i'm planning on changing mine sometime soon. mine only has about 114k on it, but i'm going to change my oil at 115k even tho i'm pretty sure the dealer did before i bought it. i figure on changing the water pump and timing belt right before the oil.

Good job.

FYI, don't judge a belts age by mileage only. Time is a factor as well. Plenty of belts have snapped in 99s and 00s with 50,000 miles on them in the last few years. I did mine at 82,000 miles last year. Recommended interval is 104,000 miles, or 84 months (7 years), whichever comes first.

Is the LHForums,net gone? I bookmarked this really great How-To for future reference. Well, the future is here and I'm getting ready to to the work.but now I can't access the pages.

If the LH Forum is gone, does anyone know where else I may be able to find this particular How-To? Was it maybe preserved somewhere here at DI.NET?

it occasionally goes down for a few days till someone in charge notices. been down all long weekend. give it a day or 2. should be back up or else someone should have some news.

Great! It scared me when I couldn't see the forum for a few days. There is so much good info in that thread. I' was kicking myself for not saving the whole thing to my HDD last year when I bookmarked it.
