Thumbs down help finding a new comp

i recently purchased a new comp desk and now my current old ass tower does not fit. wife says old desk has to go, so i guess so does the old comp!! i only use the comp for surfing the net, storage of music and photos, and for the occasional school project. no gaming or anything of that nature. i am wanting to spend $500 or less (not a lot i know, but i am sure there are some out there that around this price). i already have all peripheral devices, so i only need the tower. new or used?? if anyone can point me to a decent tower, i would appreciate it!! thanks...

I will take the old tower if it works

I would go to dell.com and check it out. There are some on there for right at 500.00

Personally I'd go for a mini PC and build it myself. I love the Ultra Microfly cases, which I saw on sale last month for $50 shipped. ($40 + ship now) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...612&CatId=3428

Seriously though...........ANY Core 2 Duo processor........and go from there. Forget AMD.........Intel has the speed advantage. <- Coming from an AMD guy who just bought an Intel Q6600 CPU.

Heck...........what's wrong with this for $300 - $25 MIR? (I know it's not a core 2 duo.......but you can't argue with the price, and it'll do everything you need it to do).......just need to add a DVD burner, a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard........and Windows XP Home.

would that use other parts from *standard* desktops? for example, hard drives, video cards, usb things, etc??

There are lots of better components, but that should be fine for what you want to do. Could you use the OS install from your old tower instead of buying a new one? And make sure the motherboard has a video port (blue trapezoid) cause if it doesn't then you'll need a video card, too.

Those Pentium D's are craptastic CPU's. Stick with a Core chipset at minimum. What I pointed you to is a better system than those Staples systems.

Most standard desktop parts will fit in a micro PC.......the difference being the micro ATX motherboard and the fact that it can't hold more than a few hard drives, and only 2 DVD writers (not sure how many ppl need more than 2 besides me.........I need 3 for my purposes).

Also.........probably best to buy the fastest RAM your motherboard can handle..........DDR800 isn't expensive at all. I got 2GB of OCZ Platinum 4-4-4-15 DDR800 on Boxing Day for $20.

ok, i was just browsing what stores are available in my area (only WM and Staples!!).
aside from the ram, would the above be sufficient? i can replace the ram with the DDR2 800 for about 10 bucks less than listed above no prob.

I'm kinda a PC enthusiast, and PC enthusiasts don't steer people to buy prebuilt box store systems. Should get something custom ordered off the net. Course, the easy way is always just to head down to your local store and plunk down a bunch of money on a system that isn't configured optimally unless the buyer just doesn't care and wants it to work satisfactorily well.

.........don't go for XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit unless you can put up with a few headaches. I've had a few so far..........finally my iPod works (Apple just released a 64 bit version of iTunes), but my Konica Minolta colour laser printer is still down.......and will probably never work with Vista 64.

ok, i measured the comp desk i have and that little micro case is too wide by 1/2". as far as cases go, could i use one of my old ones lying around if i removed all internal components and replaced with new? i have my old emachines case and a compaq presario. both the same size (mid-tower??). just trying to save some $$. i need to sell some shit to help contribute to this fund!!!

-here are some parts i have lying around: 1 450W psu*, 2 80GB HDD (1 7200rpm* & 1 5400rpm), 1 160GB HDD 7200rpm*, 1 video card 128MB.
*= new parts. others are used but still function perfect.

i know i have had a million and one questions and i truly appreciate the responses so far. hopefully the last question (at least for today!!) ok, here goes:
i was looking on the back of my non-working towers where the mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc all plug in and if i got a new mobo to be placed inside, is that plate that covers the areas not being used, removeable/replaceable with one that matches the new mobo? i can try to find pics if necessary, but hopefully you understand what i am referring to. thanks again...

A new mobo comes with a new plate that is specific to that mobo. Most of them are different designs.
