Angry Hard drive help

Anyone have a copy of a hard drive diagnostic tool? I need something, anything. My WD 320 GB EIDE drive keeps giving me the BSOD. Brand new drive bought in August 07. It started about 2 or 3 months ago. It will be fine for weeks at a time and then I turn on the monitor and I see BSOD.
At that point I have to physically unhook the drive and hook it back up to get it to boot up again. It normally works but last night it wouldn't boot up no matter what I did to it. Finally, my girlfriend got it to come on after turning it on and off an unhooking everything and stuff like that.

I have ran the WD tools but it passes all the tests. I have a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and new IDE cable so I know that is not the problem. I know it is the hard drive because of the boot_disk_failure that it says on the BSOD.

I am at my wits end. I am just hoping that I don't have to send for a replacement at this point because I need my computer for school.
Well, anyone have any other advice besides stay away from the WD drives? How about a good replacement drive? Hitachi is what I was thinking.

Seems quite odd that you'd have a drive failure after only a couple of months?

Most reliable drives are Seagate Barracuda's. I'm running 3 of the 500GB versions in my desktop. Thinking about getting another as 1.5TB of storage space just isn't enough :(

Yea that is what I thought too. I never had a problem with WD at all. I still have a 30 GB that runs great just wanted more storage and that is why I got the 320 GB.

Low voltage can cause problems with a hard drive how big of a power supply do you have. I have 550 watt supply and its to small for me to plug in my other other drive i can only have 3 drives hooked up the minute i hook up my other drive the whole system starts going flaky. I can use any combination of the 4 drives i have but not all of them at one time. You may have a power supply problem. Thats probably the cheapest and easiest place to start. I'd start by disconnecting every drive except the one thats having problems. See if the problem goes away. If it doesn't try another drive and see if it goes away. Seagate drives are great i've not had a problem with them ever. They are cheap too You can pick them up at Walmart.

What makes you think it's a bad drive?

Bluescreens can be caused by any number of things...far too many to count. In fact I'd be pretty surprised if it was the drive in your case. Most likely either a corrupted o/s, bad driver, low memory voltage, etc etc.

Thanks for the help guys. I went ahead and bought a new hard drive. I installed Win XP Pro 64 bit edition and as of 72 hours or so, nothing at all wrong.
All I have hooked up is the motherboard (of course), the hard drive, and a DVD burner. Nothing else. I had at the time a monitoring program on my computer, mostly for the temp but it did all the other stuff too and never once did the voltage go under what it was suppose to. So, I ruled the voltage out. Not really sure about memory volts but I am sure that if it was that it would have froze, not given me the BSOD.
I ran a diagnostic tool from Hitachi and it must be better because it picked some unknown problem on the hard drive.
Tomorrow I am getting it sent to be replaced under warranty. Thanks again guys.

I agree with Sovnade, I don't think it's your drive. You can have a 1000W PSU, but if your voltage is inadequate, you could have possible problems. BSOD is a Windows thing and can frequently happen, a big thanks to all of our big wigs at microsoft :-). You can download speedfan, it has an hdd diagnosis tool in it that you can run. What I think is that you have a bad sector, that in a lot of cases can be repaired with software.

Speed Fan is actually the monitoring tool that I use. The only thing that it was saying was something about the usage hours or something like that. Can't remember exactly what it said, but nothing else was reported to be wrong.

I used the Hitachi program and that is when I got the error. It couldn't tell me exactly because it is a WD drive and not Hitachi.

Check Disk did repair something on my computer, dunno what though because my girlfriend didn't write it down. Something was repaired with it though. It didn't help it crashing though. Every min or so she said it was throwing the BSOD up and she finally turned it off. I am going to hook it back up tomorrow to see if I can get my stuff off of it and see if I can get teh BSOD up again to see exactly what it says.

According to Apple, you can't call them BSOD's on their machines.......they're just referred to as Blue Screens on Apple products.

So if you're like me and believe that a BSOD is the exact same damn thing as a Blue Screen, then it isn't just a Microsoft thing

Just a followup...from your original post, it doesnt sound like you ever reformatted the original drive and reinstalled windows. The O/S gets corrupted from time to time, and sometimes all it needs is a fresh format/install.

Listen next time the OS gets corupted, just go into the safe mode as the admin of the box not the same user name though. Then click on the control panel then on system. Click on the advanced tab then on users profiles. Now delete the profile that is giving you the trouble. Next time you reload windows it will create a new profile with a fresh xp or etc.

Note: always backup your my docs, cookies, favorites and desktop into a another folder on the HDD.

thanks for the tip. I have been real busy so I haven't done anything with the drive yet. I did put it as a slave drive and as long as it is not the drive I boot to it gives me no problem. I am just assuming that it means that it may not be the drive necessarily, just the OS. I will try the profile delete first to see if that does anything, if not, its a fresh copy of Windows for me.

Always back these up in a folder on ANOTHER HDD or storage medium.
