Casio CASSIOPIA E 300? HP Jornada 540 series?

hey guys need a PDA quick, i have 160$ and i am going to buy one or the other. dont know which yet, leaning toward HP Jornada (540 series?) anyways. any thoughts? places to buy from etc... thnaks, o btw if you know of a better one, for the same price, it must include color screen, Windows OS,--basically the same stuff these two PDAs have... thanks

Ok, first of all, you are talking about two different types of PDA's. The Casio BE-300 is a pocket manager, the jornada is a pocket pc. I have the Casio e-125 - it rocks. The only problem is that you only have $160. Let me ask you this, what do you want to do with your PDA? (PS I have been researching PDA's for about two years and never, I repeat never get anything Palm os based)

I'm curious as to why not get anything palm OS?? We (my family) has a Vior Prism, Visor Edge, and Visor Deluxe and we havent had any problems with them. The OS is stable, not something i can say for Microsoft's earlier version of the Windows cystem for PDA's. Anyway my next PDA will be a Handspring, and will have the Palm OS removed and i will install some version of Linux on it.

PS I am into programming so making applications that i will use will be no problem

Hi,

The BE-300 is a piece of crap, IMHO. I had to return it twice, first a BE-300, then I got a Clie T415(it was kinda expensive for a black&white PDA), so I went back to a BE-300 and decide to give it another try(after discovering some wonderful sites - www.be300.net but I still couldn't take it), Palm 500(I really needed color) and now finally Palm M130(for $400 CND). The M130 perfectly sync(ed) all the datat from my older Palm IIIxe.

Pros:
1) mp3 playing through the audio jack
2) color LCD for $299 CND
3) uses the cheaper Compact flash2 cards
4) you can download a freeware console(nintendo?!) emulator and play roms will full color/sound
5) play divx movie with BE-Divx
6) a linux based OS(in making, by the BE fans) will be out in 6 months or so...
7) you can run a patched PocketDos on it, which allows you to run old 486/386 dos programs on it....it worked fine with my Borland C++ 3.1

Cons:
1)It has a *really* bad GUI interface, it's WIN CE3.0,
2)Virtually no software(it will NOT run any PPC software)
3)bad sync software(if it is to fail, your PC MUST do a reboot b4 it will ever sync again)
4)whenever you install software, it must be in it's own installer's exe installer format(rather than Palm's PRC, which you double click and it's in)
5) the LCD gets "white" after uses, kinda like lost of contrast/color
6) the LCD needs time to "wakeup" around 10sec to get to full brightness, unlike a palm
7) you can only sync with Outlook(not outlook express), which needs to be purchased separately
8) the software(rom) is so stupidly designed that...you can't even set the default column to sort with inside your contacts list...it automatically defaults to "Company"... what about your personal contacts ?! (a solution does exists, you will need to transfer the contacts executable onto a PC and hex edit one of the bits, then overrides the one on the BE....DUUHHHhh!! )

The BE-300 is just horrible IMO... Neither get a Palm or a Clie, can't beat the Palm OS.

and BTW, the BE-300 runs Windows CE3.0...so DON'T expect any of the PPC(pocket pc) software will run on it.... ANDDD...there's the 4mb hardware memory limit, Pocket Quake/Doom will never be ported.

edit: forgot to answer your question, you can get BE-word(free) from somwewhere I recall. It only allows you to read DOC files not any editing. But how would you be able to sync it back ?! You can't, coz the "PumaSync" that it comes with only syncs with Outlook, nothing elses.

The reason why I said never get a palm is not because it is unstable. I have look at palm's and pocket pc's for the past couple of years. I have had a palm IV, a sony clie, a ipaq, and a cassiopia.
1. Palm is way too expensive for what you get. You can get a pocket viewer from casio that will do the same thing as some palms and be almost half of the price.
2. Too small a screen and mostly black and white.
3. The Ipaq was awesome but if you wanted to upgrade and put things into it you had to pay an arm and a leg for extra accessories.
4. The sony clie was ok but the battery life was way too short.
5. My pick is the cassiopeia e-125 or e-200. Do not mistake this for the be-300. They run two different forms of windows ce. I do think that be-300 does have word but the e-125 and e-200 can run the world. here are a list of things I have on my e-125
Word, Excel, mobile callender, picture and movie player, windows media player, about fifteen different nintendo games that I downloaded to it, wireless email, wireless full html internet, an infrared port, aol, calculator, microsoft money, voice recorder, digital camera attachment with jpeg and mpeg movie capibility, a compact flash card bay built in on the top, and last but not least, the best thing, pocket copilot GPS through my trep. I put in an address and it tells me where I am, shows me on the screen, shows me how to get there, and actually speaks to me how to get there by even saying things like "take left on east st in 1.2 miles ahead"

Most pda's are upgradeable to do things you would even think of that is why I asked you what you are planning on using it for.

FYI.....I started out with a few Palm devices way back when, and made the change to PocketPC when the first iPAQ became available, and I will never go back to Palm (not that there is anything wrong with Palm, just that PPC is so much more versatile)

I was a tech with HP and I am certified for working on HP Jornadas and if I had the money man I would get a Jornada either a 540 or 560. They have word, exel, media player, and a ton of downloads at tucows.com . So which ever you get I am trained at windows CE and pocket pc 2000 so if you have any questions I can help.

I agree...but...

I agree with what you said about the iPaq 100%, however...
an Ipaq(base model 32mb) cost almost double of a mid range palm. But being a student that I am, ...can't really afford to shell out $700 for a PDA.

I did have a chance to play with my pal's ipaq 3890 or whatever(the one with builtin bluetooth), I find myself rather playing too much games on it.... A Palm makes me...ummm how should i say.. more productive-wise.

Loved the iPaq LCD, almost 1half bigger than my palm...

Thanks for the explanation, my next one is going to be one of the new sony clies with the palm OS taken off and LINUX installed. Stable i can mak whatever programs i need, i dont really care about watching movies or playing music imo there isnt enough memory to get a good long movie (not that i would steal 1 off the web anyway ) and i have an mp3 player already. That being said when i go into a store i drool over the displays on those iPaqs
