dual monitors

Anyone have dual monitors hooked up? I just got a huge computer desk and was thinking about trying it out. I believe my dell is just a plug and play. The only bad thing is that the 2nd monitor isnt a flat screen and it isnt an LCD so it will prolly look stupid. My plan is to do it and get use to it... if I like it then I will go buy another dell flat screen.

I'm interested in seeing pictures of your setup with dual monitors.

i dont have access to pictures since im not allowed to bring a camera into work for confidentality reasons. my computer and 75% of the computers here are dual moniters and it comes in handy. my main monitor is mounted the right way while the 2nd one is mounted sidewards. on the main screen i can see everything im working on and on the 2nd one has my search doggy and my scanner program. makes work a hole lot easier. when i had my laptop i did the dual monators for gaming reasons. i would set it up so my game was on the tv but running off the laptop and the stragtery guied on the laptop screen.

Not any more, and no pics. when I did.
It was nice to have a page on each screen instead of tabs on one screen, but I needed one for another PC.
My lonely old Mac sitting here by me also needs one, so I have to switch this monitor over when I use it.
Don't yet have a third monitor, or even a KVM at this point.
Three PC's and a Mac with only two monitors sucks.
Then again, I guess I can only use one at a time anyway.

here ya go...

excuse the mess... I am very busy at times and have given up on making it look nice until my house is built and I get my own office...

I love dual monitors. I'm an Energy Consultant here in CA. I generate energy reports for building efficiencies and solar system sizing and such. I put my AutoCAD drawing on one side from the architect, and my energy program on the other screen... it's reduced the paper I used to waste printing stuff and it has made my report times quicker...

want to know anything specific?

oh, these are Viewsonic 22" wide screen LCDs on a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS (card has dual outputs, so I only have one card... no problems at all with it)...

FYI: I like this setup so much, that when I get my office done... I'm going dual video cards with (4) monitors (2 for my drawing table, (2) for my regular desk, on the same machine with dual mice and keyboards (each for my drawing table and desk)... and don't forget my mini keyboard to the left of my desk there... it's a gaming keypad (Belkin Nostroma N52)... I use that because the configuration software uses profiles that auto-change with the active window... so I have one set of keys for AutoCAD and another for my energy program, and even though I have them open at the same time, the profile for the active one (foreground) is the one that on at that time... it changes that on the fly... the configuration software also allows macros to be programed for a single key stroke... complete with pause and time delays that you can use... the sky is the limit on that puppy... anyway, sorry to jack that all in...

I had three monitors going at one time. It's insane with games also, not so much with dual monitors.

So I take it that its more then just a plug. You have to have 2 graphic cards?

I don't know the desktop situation but I know that my HP laptop has VGA output and I can just run a cord to another monitor and it functions with the laptop screen and another monitor flawlessly. For a desktop I would assume you need to have either a single video card with dual outputs or 2 cards.

if you use this connector, both monitors will display the same info... you must have a video card that can control two monitors separately or dual video cards...

it's the only way. even some laptops may have the built-in screen and an external screen, but only ones that have enough video memory and a good enough graphics processor can control the monitors independently...

the video card I have, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS has dual DVI outputs and the software (drivers) configure the monitors in any fashion you wish...

Modes:

Windows Desktop Stretched to second monitor (start menu across both monitors)
Windows Desktop Extended to second monitor (my setup, start menu on primary monitor)
Windows Desktop Mirrored on second monitor (what you would have with that cable)
etc...

there are many ways to do it

that card should hold up two screens. you can either get a VGA-DVI adapter for the second screen or just get one that is already DVI compatible. Newegg.com should have the adapters for pretty cheap. By the looks of your index score it seems that you won't be gaming too much with that card anyway so it wouldn't matter.

Looks like I need an adapter then. As soon as I get that then it should be all plug n play?

My dell monitor has both slots on it but I assume it would be better to get an adapter or to unplug the blue cord and plug in the white one to the main screen?

well you need to go to windows dispaly settings.

Right click on you background - go to personalize on the very bottom of the list and choose display settings. On it you will see a picture with two screens. click on the second screen and below the picture there is an icon saying "extend the desktop to this monitor" click on the box next to it. You're good to go now.
