Smile Windows 10 Release Comment Thread

Thought I'd start this. Today 7-29 is the Official release of Windows 10 to the Public.

Microsoft has announced they'll offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users. This showed up in the Taskbar as an Icon or within Windows Update itself.

I'm downloading Windows 10 pro right now and installing it on several PCs. I'll keep everyone updated on how well or how badly it goes. Along with the ability to Roll Back to the previous OS etc.

So feel free to post any comments you have or anything regarding your experiences eith the new OS.

One question that has come up is: Is the free upgrade free forever, or is it free for a year and then you have to pay (either a one-time purchase to keep it, or on a subscription basis).

This article (linked by Duds) seems to be saying that if you upgrade during the current free upgrade period, then it's free forever, but if you wait until after that free upgrade period, you'll have to pay for it: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonke...-happens-next/

Information to further clarify will be posted when obtained.

I'm guessing there won't be an extended "Free Upgrade" period.

Windows 7 never had a "Free Upgrade" situation. You either bought the new OS or you did with the original.

Right now there are options to download Windows 10 outside of the upgrade program.

I still don't see anything referring to a "Subscription" version whether it's an Upgrade or Retail. Think that's a rumor! But what do i know? LOL!

How does anybody like windows 10 compared to 7 or 8 ? I don't think I'll take the "upgrade" as I'm pretty content with Windows 7. From what I've seen of windows 8, I never liked it (especially when I tried to use it once).

its pretty much 7 and 8/8.1 combined, in my eyes. The versatility of both put together. I'm still working on settings and learning about it

3 of 10 Upgrades to Win 10 Pro complete. Couple of others are being a little stubborn. Implementing a few "Workarounds" which seem to be progressing fine. Yes that's right...I've got 10 different PCs to Upgrade!

I miss the Desktop gadgets I had in Win 7. Really pissed about Windows Media Center being dropped completely. Now I need a 3rd party substitute like Kodi or Plex which are both a PITA to setup the DVR for the HDTV Tuners.

Most of my original programs seem to work fine. A few like the ASRock Fast USB aren't compatible but they're no great loss.

I used the Beta for over 3 months and liked it so much I hopped on the Upgrade Bandwagon! A lot of windows 7 is still in Windows 10. but you get the features of 8/8.1 that are decent also. I'd recommend the upgrade to anyone i know. And if you don't like it you can always rollback to Windows 7 without issue. Unless you have a Pirated version. Then the rollback won't be so easy! Heh!

Got tired of all the downloading on different PCs. Created a USB Windows 10 Pro Install drive and burned the ISO to DVD. Now i can do a quick Clean Install/Upgrade on all of the PCs.

Looks like the equivalent of Internet Explorer in Win 10 is called Edge! This looks like the Bing Desktop interface that Microsoft recently tried to force on everyone.

Already got the automatic repair loop problem. I didn't have the chance yet to burn the ISO to a DVD yet so looks like my cell will be my computer until I find a fix.

Guessing you don't have a backup? Have you tried booting in safe mode?

Can't help you unless you have a 2nd PC. Otherwise I'd provide the ISO, etc.
