No image on monitor 'Sync out of range'

So I have a strange situation, my friend has a pc with a 15" LCD monitor, last thing they remember doing to the computer was change the resolution and now there is no image. I brought a CRT from work to see if it could display the resolution the computer is set to. No luck. When I tried to go into Safe Mode, it still would not show any image. When booting up, it gets as far as the XP loading screen and then the message (on the CRT) Sync Out of Range shows up. For the LCD it shows VGA Mode Not Supported...

Anyone smarter than me with some good ideas?

Much help is appreciated! =)

Well if it is giving you those error messages, my idea would be to get a different video card and shove into the system.

That error could mean that the video card is fixing to take a dump on him, or it is trying to use the resolution the computer was set at.

Before you even screw with video cards, you can try to use this:

When the PC starts to boot up (Gets past Power On Self Test SCREEN), start hiting the F8 key and when the menu pops up tell it to USE LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION and it should bring up the PC. IF not then mess around with the video card.

The Unappreciated Misfit

Sounds like the CRT can't handle 800x600 at 60hz.

Quote:
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
only works for software screw ups, not hardware. Meaning the system it self see's everything is fine but the monitor can't cope with those settings. Isn't the generic plug & play monitor driver fun lol.

toss in a second video card and setup a BATCH file that will insert the correct settings via registry so during the next startup with the primary card it will inject the registry code and change the res then just reboot again and everything should be fine. What version of windows is the system running. I'll give you the snip of code.

I don't see how they were able to change the resolution over then what the monitor can handle. If you go over the resolution you loose visual and 15 seconds later it goes back because you couldn't select yes to keep the new settings unless the person knew to hit Tab and space.

It's running XP Home... I already tried a new video card and it threw out the same error messages. Unless you're idea will still work regardless...

I tried booting up in safe mode. Same messages... That was my initial thought, too, that the resolution would default or something.

hhmm, the registry idea won't work. The address for the card and monitor are different from computer to computer. If you can do a remote registry connection then go into
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\VIDEO\{Address of primary video card}\0000\
and change the settings for DefaultSettings.XResolution and DefaultSettings.YResolution.

Actually, one thing I have not seen anyone suggest is go ahead and do the "F8" trick, however, instead of the "Last Know Good Configuration" option, choose the "Enable VGA mode"....what this does is it forces the computer to run and the most minimal resolution possible, without changing any other windows setting. This, in effect, will allow you to change the resolution. KEEP IN MIND, that if the screen goes black and stays that way for more then 15sec. it will go back by default so don't freak out. Just keep changing the settings till it works. ;)
