Question

Hey guys...wonder what its going to take for me to print from one computer at a printer thats hooked to another computer in my house.

Basically hooked to one computer I have an inkjet, and the other computer a laser jet....all HP products...and I would like to be able to print on the laser jet from my computer that has the inkjet printer....

I cant hook the laser jet up to that because its not compatible with vista, (other computer has XP) so is there a way I can network the two together and still print on the laser jet?

So you've verified on HP's website that there's not a Vista driver? Because XP-based CDs won't install the Vista driver, but HP has been fairly diligent at making the software available online.

That's where the issue is going to lie. In order to network a printer, either directly into a router or by wireless print sharing module, the software for the printer you want to be utilized has to be on that computer - i.e the Vista computer needs the drivers for the laser jet.

The fact that both are HP products doesn't matter in this scenario. What I would say to do, after checking HP's website, is to see whether or not the default printer driver Vista has will work with that printer. Basically, you hook it up and sees if it auto-installs. Even if it does, though, without the actual driver you may be out of luck..

Havent checked lately...but recently they did not have a driver out for my other printer that was compatible with Vista. I will have to check HP's website. If I can get a driver my next question will be what is needed to hook it up. Thanks Sean.

If you just want to print text documents you might be able to get away with the generic printer driver, thats if Vista has support for it that generic driver.

There are a few ways to force Vista to use a unsupported driver like setting up a CUPs server via CYGWIN or postscript but it may not work. With today's printers it tends to make things more difficult.
