Converting from Outlook Express to Outlook

I decided to use MS Outlook 2003 (MS Office Pro 2003 installed) for email instead of Outlook Express v6, because I was having problems sending certain picture formats inserted in documents.

When I opened Outlook it asked if I wanted to make it my default email pgm, I selected yes.

I went to the MS site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291602/) and followed the instructions
on importing Express messages, address book, rules. That executed without any problems.

The problem is my mail is still going to Outlook Express.

My IE v8 Internet Properties/Programs/E-mail confirms itís MS Office Outlook.
My MS Office Outlook/Options/Other/General/ Make Outlook the default pgm for E-mail,Contacts,Calendar is checked.

I donít want to use any other email clients.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In outlook, make sure that your incoming mail server, and outgoing mail server, are set... Then go into Express and remove that account...

I haven't had the (dis)pleasure of having to remove accounts from 'Express... But what happens if you were to NOT run 'Express, but only run the regular OutLook? If you have everything set, and just stop using 'Express, your problem should go away, should it not?

I don't receive any new mail in Outlook. When I log into the Outlook account the only mail in my all my folders is the mail that was transferred from Express last week when I set up the Outlook account. If I reset the email account from Outlook to Express(IE/tools/internet options/programs/e-mail) my Inbox has all my new mail up to and including today.

Then you haven't set up the account in the Add accounts area... I'll have to look at how to do it when I get home tonight...

Basically, it sounds like the conversion you did was to migrate all of the already received email to the new Outlook, but you haven't actually set up outlook to receive your emails... I don't think that is part of the migration you did.

When I first opened Outlook, I got the following: Outlook is not currently your default program for E-mail, Calendar, Contacts. Would you like to make it the default program?
I selected "Yes".
I assumed that would take set up every thing, then I did the migration.
I checked the program options in IE and changed it to Outlook because it still showed Express as my email program.
Also when I opened Outlook it went straight to my inbox. It didn't ask for my password like Express. ???
After a couple of days of not seeing any new mail in my Outlook inbox, I changed the email program options in IE back to Express, logged in and there was all my new mail. ????

Yea, what you selected to make it default was just when you use the right-click menu to use 'send' or if you click on a hyperlink email address or use the 'contact us' link on some websites...

What version of outlook are you trying to set up?

Check out http://products.secureserver.net/ema...il_outlook.htm for simple visual rundown of what you want to set up - replace the values given with what your ISP gives you or your email provider, and go from there... see if that helps you.

If not, then I'll need to know what version of outlook and the name of email service (gmail, AOL, Hotmail, etc).

When I checked my email accounts there are now two accounts, with different names.
They are both the same “Type” (POP/SMTP )one of them is designated as (Default).
All the user, server, logon info is the same.
This is why, when I selected to make “Outlook” my default email pgm, I believe it set up the second account.
Also no matter which program I designate as email pgm the (Default) doesn’t change.

Since I’m not too computer savvy I don’t want to start deleting either of those accounts and be left without any accounts.

MS Office Outlook 2003(11.8325.8324)SP3 /Optonline.net.
CDMCCUL I really appreciate all your help, but I think I’m going to stay with Express.

So to resolve the problem I had with sending pictures with Express, I’m going to need additional help.
When I “Insert” a picture(bmp or jpg) into a MS Word document then “Copy” and “Paste” the document into the email body, the addressee sometimes only sees a little red x instead of the picture.
Likewise if I “Insert” the bmp/jpg into the email body I some times get the same results.
Is it the picture format (bmp/jpg) that is causing the problem??
What is the correct way to send a document with an “Inserted” picture?

CDMCCUL thanks for all your help. Rep left.
Phil

Hehehehehe, I've never realy inserted pictues, I always end up using the 'attach' feature - mainly because some incoming mail services will strip inserted pictures, and some will strip them and include as attachements... sometimes it is an artifact of the ISP, sometimes it is an aritfact of the software used to display it. I'll have to experiment with it, but I don't have Express installed, only outlook (and right now, I don't remember if it is '97 or 2003)
