I LOVE free stuff!

I was given two LCD computer screens at work, or I just dug them out of the trash. Brought them home took a wild guess as to what was wrong and bought replacement parts totaling 7 bucks. In the Accer I located two bad Capacitors(black), which I replaced and in the Samsung just one Bad capacitor.(green)

I have to say, for some one with no electrical repair training I am pretty awesome! This makes a total of 3 LCD screens I have fixed. One 32in LCD, One 19in (I think) accer and one 17in Widescreen Samsung all for less than 10 bucks!

Pretty cool! Component replacement parts like that make repair really easy, yes seem magical. Congrats on your new toys!

What made you say those were the bad parts?

Alot of the times when a Cap like these go bad, the top gets domed or pushed out. This is a visual clue. I also look for heat marks on the board or corrosion. To check a cap using a Ohm meter on a multimeter, it should jump up to a number, and then slowly go down if it is bad. If it goes up and continues then it is good. Always reverse the leads after every test to make sure you got them right.

Diodes I believe will just crack open if they go bad. Atleast the one in the 32 in LCD did.

If you think it is a bad cap, and you can't tell which one it is, I'd do a Google search on it and make sure that it isn't already reported on a fixit forum.

Otherwise, bad caps can be found by having either burned, or they can leak out the liquid they are filled with... the will then fail. Also, many time the liquid they have will eat traces and other components, so when you pop out the capacitor it is a good idea to investigate the traces and other solder joints surrounding it for damage.

As Devan just said a little better, yes, they dome or buldge - generally from having cheap cans and expanding due to heat - and this is was allows the electrolyte to leak out.

There was a huge quality issue at one of the main capacitor manufacturers a few years back, very common problem across tons of different products to experience latent failures. I have a DVD recorder that some day I'll get around to fixing 6 or 7 bad caps on. Great fix Devan!1
