Home Network Help

My computer reciently bit the dust. So I rebuilt it (we can make it better, stronger, faster) for a hell of a lot less!

My new setup features a 1 gb nvdia video card, AMD Phenom II 965 Black Edition CPU, monster heat fan, ASUS MB that supports 16gb DDR3 ram, 2 SATA @ 6gb, along with all the other overclocking goodies. New 1TB Black Edition HD with 32mb flash onboard.

Now here's the issue. I've got a Netgear dual band DSL gigabit router/modem, the modem on my MB is a 10/100/1000. I've got Verizon High Speed DSL ( I know get the cable modem!!) But my DL speed is around 1.3 upload is slower, but since I do very little uploading it's not an issue.

The modem wont connect any higher than 100 duplex. I've tried switching out the settings on the card to Auto-Negotiate as well as straight 1000. The cable I'm using is Cat 6e and the Netgear router is about 2 feet from my computer.

Any ideas on how to connect any faster?

That might be the speed of your ISP.

I have comcast and I'll get speeds ranging from 1.5 to 20 for download 1 to 4 for upload.

Just so you know most ISP will not have a 1GB(1000) connection all the way to your modem/router so it is pointless really. The only real purpose for 1GB speed at home is faster downloading from one computer in your home to another computer in your home. 100 can handle really high speeds as it is. I have done speed test when I worked for the ISP company and I was getting an average of 45MB and I was sitting on the backbone of the 100M feed coming in.

The question becomes what is the speed you should be getting for your service and what type of service do you have? . If it is phone line they are VERY notorious for bad wiring in the home or even to the street. Cable internet is the same but it is much more reliable then phone. The only thing that is basically rock solid is Fiber. Also you are sharing with other customer and if you live in a really populated area or apartment complex that could cause some problems too during high times. Also just so you know upload will always be lower and most companies have it set at 768K depending on the package.
