TV remotes..all work like crap suddenly

so the title pretty much sums it up.. All 3 of our TV remotes went lame on us today.. all got fresh batteries..no change.. they will work here and there.......one TV the remote dont work at all...... the other you have to sit 2 feet from the sensor and play with it till it works.....
Wondering if anyone has any idea what might be causing this?? the TV's (both 42" plasma if that makes any difference) are in adjoining rooms..faced different directions.. and have been there for about 4 years with no issue. no new electronic devices have been introduced into the home to cause interference..
I did a quick google search but found nothing helpful.
I appreciate any responses.. and yea I know..walk up and press the button..but who wants to do that ...since it's past 1985? lol

Power blast from a local ion generator desensitized them. Probably from a himustatic converter that became decoupled from one of these.

Seriously though..... No idea. Kinda strange.

At my parents house we had issues like this, but it was related to an IR repeater that was picking up and spewing interference. Is there anything like that involved that could be producing IR interference?

Usually a couple of whacks on the hand or a sofa cushion will fix mine! LOL. How about any neighbors get new equipment that could be running interference?

might be dirty under the buttons. I would use a small flat screwdriver and pry open the case and clean all contacts with alcohol and q-tip. Food and particals of crap get under there all the time. Will work like a charm when your done

Zephyr...No Idea..my neighborhood pretty much keeps to themselves..I dont socialize with em.
Stroise.. I check them often.. I'm disgusted by gunked up buttons on remotes..ours are all clean.
Ronbo.. we're using them spiral flourescent bulbs..but none were on at the time.
Dr. D..perhaps...perhaps
Spencer..I'd shoot the hell out of an alien for messing with my remotes.. but I dont have a gun :(

Little update...today they seem to be back to normal... it was really annoying when it was happening though... Still interested in possible solutions..in case the problem comes back ..
Thanks for the replies...useful and funny alike
