Question Calling the Pro's - HP DV5 Touchpad Issues

Quick background, I've had this thing since August 2009. It's an HP DV5 1334CA with Windows 7 Home 64Bit. I did a fresh install on it back in December and everything went awesome. Fast forward to a week ago when I decided to clean up the task bar by getting rid of some icons, one of those was the Synaptic's driver icon. After that, the touch pad stopped working and has never been the same. Once and a while it will start working again, usually after a re-start. But after I restart the computer from hibernation it randomly stops working and the driver disappears from the task bar. Then, I need to pull out the corded USB mouse so I can use the computer. I've tried downloading the newest driver, no fix. I've also tried deleting the driver and re-installing, no fix. It basically comes down to when the Synaptic's driver pops up on the task bar, it works. And when it's not there, I can't find anything Synaptic's related on my computer apart from in the uninstall program menu. So, does anybody have some tips for me? The issue is really pissing me off and I wouldn't want to have to do a fresh 7 install to fix it. Thanks!

You can try to do a system restore to a time before you deleted the task bar items.

I forgot to mention that I did that too, it worked after the restart then stopped working once I woke the computer from hibernation.

You could try going back to a system restore point.

Or you could try do disable Synaptic from startup. I'd type MSCONFIG in the start menu's search box (sys config) and look for it in the startup list.

Wait... what the heck is Synaptic and why do you need it again?

Ah, Dave already suggested system restore.

Try uninstalling your mouse from device manager first, then install the software.

Synaptic is the company that makes the touchpad.

I disabled the driver at start up, and upon a restart the touchpad started working again. I proceeded to uninstall the touchpad now that it was identified in the device manager. When I restarted again the touchpad was recognized and I updated the windows driver to a Synaptic's one so I could use the scroll option. Up to now it's working, fingers crossed. I'll update later if it changes, thanks guys!

So it didn't work, I restarted the computer after hiburnation and the touchpad no longer worked. I tried shutting down the computer and restarting it. When it got back to the log in screen the pad still didn't work and the keyboard didn't either. I forced a restart with the power button and the keyboard works, no pad though. Any other ideas?

Ohhhh, "touchpad"... as in the laptop's pointing device! For some reason I was thinking about something totally different.

Well if updating the driver isn't working, I'd suggest first uninstall all related software and drivers, then totally remove the hardware from device manager, reboot, and let it "find the new hardware".

Maybe since you're using the 64bit Win7, you need to make sure you're using 64bit drivers?

Could try to rollback to an earlier driver for the device.

If you've already done all that, then maybe a fresh Win7 reinstall really is in order.

The update was downloaded by Windows so you'd think it's 64bit. I think I'm just going to cut my losses and do a fresh install. The keyboard is also sporadic now so I think something in windows itself is corrupt.

I did a fresh install, and had the same problem. I re-did it a second time and still have the problem. It seems to have something to do with Windows update. Also, the keyboard cutting out happens pretty often too now. I'm at a loss, I'm pretty much at the point where I'm going to go out and buy a new laptop and get rid of this one.

If you didn't replace it yet. There is always the possibility of doing a custom install of the updates where you choose the updates you want that way you can avoid the corrupt update.

I haven't replaced it yet. Yesterday I once again did a fresh install of 7, installed all the drivers I needed, did all the updates possible for Windows, installed Office 2010 and AutoCAD 2012. I restarted the computer multiple times, took it out of hibernation a few ties too with no issues,so I thought all was good. Come this morning when I want to use it and same thing as before, the touchpad doesn't work anymore. I really thought I had it this time around, I guess not. I might just bring it to my Cousin's fiance who's going to school for computer tech, maybe he can figure ii out for me.

I know that I can be selective with them but I can't seem to find the currupt update that is causing my issue.

Just an update. I decided to try loading Vista before Windows 7 to see if that would make a difference, the computer came with Vista from the factory but had the Windows 7 upgrade option. Anyways, after doing Windows updates in Vista the touch pad suddenly stopped working again, there goes my theory with a Vista fix. This also reminded me oh how big of a POS Vista was compared to 7. I reloaded 7 with the intention of never running windows update to see if that would keep the touchpad working. Well after the install I upgraded to IE 9 and after that restart the touchpad stopped working. At this point I'm at a loss. I'm starting to think the touchpad itself is defective. Looking on eBay a replacement is about 40$ shipped for a used one. I'm probably just going to buy a wireless mouse and call it a day, I'm sick of dealing with this issue.

It could have something to do with your browser. I have an HP G60 and that happened to me with synaptics....turned out to be the current version of firefox wasn't compatible so I DL'd the most recent version. I also did a complete uninstall/reinstall of synaptics with the most recent drivers and has worked fine ever since. This happened about 2 months ago.
