Name resolution problem!

OK, I've got a problem that I can't figure out, so I'll turn to the experts

First things first. I currently am running on a DSL connection to a Linksys router. We have about 12 PC's on the private network here at my home. The problem I am having is with my laptop (the computer that I use 95% of the time, so it's important!!). My laptop is currently running Windows 2000 Professional.

Now the problem:

For the last 3 nights, all of a sudden, I am unable to get to any web sites (none at all). However, my AIM, ICQ, and mIRC programs continue to function online. If I try to type in the IP address of a website in IE, it works fine

I am able to ping my gateway (linksys router), other pc's on my private LAN, as well as all my ISP's DNS servers.

When I try to run a tracert on any domain name, the only message I get is "Unable to resolve hostname". I have also switched my primary and secondary DNS servers just to be sure, as well as flushing my DNS cache.

The only way I am able to get name resolution back, is by restarting my system. After I do that, it will work all night and the next day, until the evening!! Then it happens again!!!

Like I said, this just started happening 3 nights ago. Before then, I usually leave my laptop running for months at a time without a restart.

I am at a total loss here. What can possible be causing this?? Could it be a corrupt TCP/IP stack??

Any help would be appreciated!

When was the last time you spacked your box? If you've hit the original installation files at any time since the last time you spacked it, you may very well have a corrupt stack due to file version conflicts.

My first suggestion would be to re-spack the box with SP2 and see if that helps you out. Also, you may want to pop into netsh and see if there are any "funky" settings. You should do a "netsh dump > blah.txt" at a command prompt in order to get a backup script created before you tweak anything from there. To get into the "interactive" mode of netsh, simply type "netsh" at the command prompt to see your options.

Note: netsh only exists on W2K and XP. It's very similar in syntax to Cisco's IOS. If you get stuck or aren't sure what parameters a command accepts, simply apped a " ?" (space, question mark) at the end of the command to see if there are any additional parameters.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try this weekend.

BTW, it happened again tonight :mad: It's weird how it only happens once every night....

Do you have anything funky running on a schedule? You may want to check your AT table. Simply type "at" at a command prompt to see what's there - if anything.

Also, you may want to do the netsh thing both before and after it freaks out to see if anything may have changed on your end. If not, it's most likely something on the other end.

Are you running the latest NIC drivers? Or maybe even go back a version sometimes helps as well.

Hmmm... this just started happening? Is it consistent? Once a night every night at the same time? Or after same amount of time of laptop use?? Could be some ISP wackiness. RR's DNS frequently gave me grief - I started running DNS here as a result.

Hmm... When you say that AIM and the other network proggies 'continue' to run... can one be stopped and re-lauched successfully? Once they're running, generally DNS isn't an issue after the connection is established. If you can't launch AIM once this behavior starts, then there's definitely some wackiness going on. If you CAN run some other network proggie once 'it' happens, then there's something localized to IE happening. Not good.

Hmmm... what kind of NIC are you using with that laptop? PC Card? Internal? USB? I've got a D-Link USB NIC on my living room laptop - it wigs out periodically after the laptop has gone into powersave or hibernate. Usually a unplug/plugin will fix that. I'm wondering if the NIC is starting to get wacky (tho usually if a NIC goes south, it goes ALL the way south rather than just stop forwarding name lookups. ).

On your router, do you have your DNS servers updated with the DHCP or do you have them input statically?

Everything on my network is static (I do have a DHCP server that has a scope of 50 addresses, but that is only for friends who visit or something, I don't use it.)

I know it is not a problem with the DNS servers, because all the other PC's on my network use the same servers and are not having any problems.

...and yes, my DNS info is entered correctly

1. Just started happening last week
2. Not at the same time every night.
3. Not related to amount of time laptop in use.
4. Actually happened twice on Saturday....

On another note, Outlook is also unable to contact my email servers when this happens.

Also, it seems to be contagious :( My dad just told me he had the same problem yesterday (it just has done it once so far for him).

He is running Windows XP professional on the machine that it happened to.

This is becomming a pain in the ass. I can't figure it out!!
