Bill Gates can suck my dick!!!!

Catchy title???

Anyways, here is my dilema. Everytime I go to either shut down my computer or restart it, I get an error message pop-up. The error says that Explorer has crashed. I'm NOT talking about Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer. When I click OK, the computer shuts down as normal and starts back up normally also.

I am currently running Win98 SE on a P3 450MHz.

Any ideas on what the hell is going on?? This started about a couple weeks ago.

Thanks in advance.

It is windows explorer. The GUI of windows is called Explorer (not just the utility to navigate folders and files). It's an executable file running in the background of every Windows release starting with 95.

Windows can't run without it. (unless you want to run windows command line only ;) )

That's it!

So why does it keep crashing? Doesn't seem to make sense.

Can't tell you why it keeps crashing, maybe it got corrupt somehow?

Maybe it's time for a new install of Windows 98 (I used to have to do this at least twice a year), or you can always get Windows XP (I guarantee you'll be much happier ;) ).

You've mentioned that it started happening a couple of weeks ago. The question you need an answer to is "What changed on my computer during that time?". Did you add new hardware? Did you add new software (especially one of those goofy email games)? Did you upgrade a driver?

Usually, shell crashes are, in fact, not shell crashes. Bad/old drivers and misbehaved programs running in the background are the most common culprits.

Hold your nose...here comes an analogy.

If you've ever been on a crowded bus you will know what data feels like in your computer. Pretend the road is the computer's hardware and the busses on the road are pieces of the operating system but they're moving at 10,000 miles per hour. The bus provides a way for data to move around the hardware and be processed at the correct "bus station".

Well, imagine if someone on the bus decided that he was only going to sit on the steps of the bus and would not let anyone else past him until he got to where he was going. It could make everyone late or even make them miss their stops completely.

What would happen if the rude passenger decided that he knew how to better drive the bus than the original driver? Sure, he may know how to hit the gas and turn the wheels, but he wouldn't have the added benefit of being trained by the company that made and/or operates the bus. He could then overlook some unpublished nuance with that model of bus and end up killing everyone inside.

In the example above, that rude person is known as bad software. People who don't know how to write software very well will often cut corners simply because they do not know the consequences. I have yet to see the Win98, NT4, W2K, or XP shell process crash because of itself. It has always been some other process that was the root cause with the Explorer shell crash being a symptom of that root cause.

Anyhoo...I'm tired (was up playing my Xbox all night) and fear that I've gone mad. Have a day. :p

You bastard!!!

The Xbox is next on my shopping list.

The only thing I have done to my computer was installed a couple of games. But, they weren't new games. They were games that I have installed before, but haven't played them since I reinstalled Windows about a year ago. So, I wanted to play them again so I installed them. Other than that I didn't do anything major to my computer. Oh well. I guess I will just have to re-install everything. What a pain in the ass.

Bingo,

You have a game that is not compatable with Windows 98. Check the game' websites that you installed for patches. Or just uninstall them one by one until you have no more error.
BTW, dont bother calling Microsoft about the error, they will just tell you to upgrade to XP.
