xp networking problem

Hi,
I'm having a problem with XP... i got 2 brand new comp, both came with seperated copies of XP(dell licensed). I'm trying Lan them using a linksys hub(those metal blue ones, 5 port + uplink).

i have it like this...

Cable modem -> hub -> cat5 cable to comp1
-> cat5 cable to comp2

it worked fine with any non-xp machines... but for xp...once comp1 gets an IP, comp2 will lose connection....and vise versa..

I tried to tell xp that the connection should go through a hub(with the networking wizard thingy) ... it still would not work....

Is this a problem with XP itself or am i just having a bad config ?

PLZ HLP....i'm going nuts with xp... :dozeoff:

as far as I know you should never have been able to share the connection without a broadband router, something needs to act as the gateway

the cable modem recognizes only one computer name, the hub will split the signal but it will still only allow one instance of the name on the network at a time

here's my setup..cable modem-->router-->port 1 on hub/switch-->all pc's connect to remaining ports 2 and up

this allows the router to "hold" the computer name for your ISP and all the others can then share

also--check your workgroup names to be sure they are all in agreement, sounds stupid but has given a lot of people headaches when the assumed they were in "workgroup" and discovered they weren't

But the exact setup works with win98, win2000, winME... i had 4 computer connected to it before..all running different OS.

XP is being RUDE.....it just won't share...

could it be the xp's internal firewall blocking some other port? or XP requires a real router?

hmm,

It may be a version issue. You may need the Pro version of XP, not home edition. Just the same, here is the how to from the Microsoft site.

oh crap......i only have the "home" edition...

But the strange thing is that win98(se) worked without any tweaks... all i did was plug it into the hub. Many ppl i talked to said I need a router not a hub.

Any else had a setup like this b4?

Joekd is correct cable modem only handles 1 ip address, you need a router to share ips among more than 1 computer ,it may have worked before 1 system at a time but not together.

Well,

Based on the following two pages, either edition can do it.

This one is on how to set it up on XP.

And this one is for troubleshooting it.
