Laptop Shopping (I read the other thread already)

I read through Avenger's thread to try and save time, but didn't find everything i was looking to learn. I'll lay out what I'm looking to learn to keep it straight and simple.

What I need out of my laptop:
95% of the time, it will be my home PC.
I don't do outrageous gaming, but at the same time I'm outrageously impatient, so the faster the better. At the same time, I don't need the fastest out there. 2.0 Ghz is what i'm shootin for.
I do mostly internet surfing, some photoshopping. Nothing that requires the latest in graphics, but I would like a good high quality graphics package that's commonly found.
HD - I'd like 60, possibly 80 gigs, but i know in laptops 40 seems to be the mainstream. 512 min. on the RAM
Reliability. Huge. Since I'm leaning more towards a refurbished unit, reliability is key. I looked on Dell and I'm just not ready to shell out over $1,000 on a laptop. I want a laptop to save space, and to be able to take it somewhere if i need to.

What I'm looking to find out is what brands should i be looking at, model numbers, and if anyone knows, where i should be shopping. Many TIA.

I just bought a Toshiba M55-S135. By no means the best biggest fastest laptop out there, but certainly meets our needs. CD DVD burner, XP, wireless internet, 512Mb ram expandable to 1.5 Gb, and a 80G harddrive. We paid $749 for it, gotta love them rebates, See it here;

you *might* have to run up to Boston (Cambridge).

refurbs at www.overstock.com

At overstock.com you can get some kick-ass notebooks for $1000-

The more i'm seeing this the more I think i'm gonna end up buying a desktop, and getting a lap top later down the road. I've been seeing Dell 19" LCD's on ebay for about $220-$250.

derek look at the acer 3000 series ( we use the 3003 at work) they are a 1.8 processer 512 ddr ram and 60G hd, wide screen, dvd/cdrw and have had good luck with them. Best buy was carrying them under 600 with a rebate.

I'm looking at an Acer 5002..........Turion 64. I would LOVE to buy one of those.......maybe it's not the best for gaming, but it'd be one killer laptop for the price.

Looking at the Dell Inspiron 6000, with the 15.4" widescreen. My main thing is I want widescreen. I wanted a 17", but when you add in the oh my god warranty (i don't want to shell out a fucking dime to fix this thing, even if i drop it down the stairs) i'm coming in around $1100. Dell approved me up to $3000 in financing. My thing is, does dell finance refurbished laptops as well?

The 6000 is a good computer, ive never taken a fancy to wide screens, as I want a small laptop to replace my bohemouth when I do. Also ive never used dell finance, so I have no clue.

If you do not need to be mobile I would definitely go ahead and get a desktop and just wait for the laptop. You can get more bang for your buck getting a desktop and still position yourself to have some funds for the laptop at a later time.

i have both desk and laptop....i have found since I got the desk up and running with all the goodies and the dual monitors, that my lap just kind of sits at the side.
My desk top cost me around 1500, with rebate, etc and it kicks the laps ass and the lap cost me 7500cdn, (its a alienware mj-12 770, with all the toys.) go with the desk top, then for doing little things away from the desk get either a Hand held or a palm that can link to your main.....you may end up saving some coin....

I have both a Desktop and Laptop, and its just the oppisite for me, after getting my laptop, I will never buy a desktop again, most 17" desktop LCD's cant even reach the resolution i get on my 15" LCD(1600X1200). Plus laptops are getting to become user upgradable(partially). Especially if you live a mobile lifestyle (I live between 2 houses, and commute to school) it makes sense to have a laptop.

Dell I8200: Purchased in Sept 2002
P4 1.7Ghz upgradedable to 2.5Ghz
1024mb DDR PC2700, upgradeable to 2gb
64MB Nvidia GeForce 4 440 GO, not upgradable
2 40GB 5400 HDD, upgradeable to 2 100GB HDD
8X DVD player, upgradeable to 8x Dual Layer DVD burner
24X CDRW Drive
250MB Zip Drive

I can have so many different drives cause I have one fixed Optical Drive(DVD) and one Modular spot(can hold CDRW, ZIP, HDD or a 2nd Battery)
.
so yeah I am limited by the Video car, but its not a bad card by far. Ive also strayed away from using my PDA and now i just use the laptop all the time.

You can always get a laptop and then connect a larger monitor to it. Same with a regular keyboard and mouse. Gives you the "feel" of a desktop but the ability to take it with you. Even though you may think it will always be home, you would be surprised at how many places you end up taking it.

Don't be afraid of refurbished models. Often, if a manufacturer has surplus inventory, they just mark new machines as "refurbs" so that they can charge less for them and not have to provide the regular warranty. So you are actually getting a brand new machine.
