Upgrading Laptops

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 9300, with XP Home, and it doesn't have Office. Can I take my XP Pro disc that came with my desktop and install it into my laptop? Also, it's a 1.6 ghz Pentium Mobile, what would it cost to upgrade that to say 2-2.5 ghz? And finally, what's the best speaker set (3 pieces, with sub) for under $40?

Best thing to do is format the laptop's hard drive and start fresh. It came with mostly shit on it anyways. Then do a fresh install with your desktop's XP Pro. This shoudn't be a problem tho I'm not totally sure. I run cracked versions of the OS so I'm thinking you might have problems trying to activate XP Pro on the laptop. Not sure how the whole authentication works on legal machines but it may be a problem. If it is, and you really want XP Pro, just go find a cracked version of it.

After that you can start installing all the apps you need, like MS Office. As for the CPU, can't help you there. Dunno if it's as easy as switching out a CPU as it is in a desktop. Best thing to do is just open the case and have a look. You'll be able to tell if the CPU is soldered right on the MB or if it can easily be removed.

For speakers, you can find tons of 2.1 sets in that price range. Check out www.dealmein.net every day for some great sales. I have a $30 set from staples that sounds great.

umm they dont have Centrinos past 2.26ghz the Pentium M 780

You do know that the speed of a centrino is calculated different then a P4 its possible for a Centrino to run 1.5 times faster when you do the conversion so the approximate conversion to regular P3/P4 speed woul be about 2.4Ghz at max.

You can install XP Pro on it, and any version of office you want.

if your gunna open up the laptop I suggest downloading the manual from dell. It is one of the available support dealy's on the site. On my Laptop you have to take the keyboard out, then take the video car out, then take the heatsink off, then unlock the cpu and it pops out.

It is also important that you know exactly what processor you have and know what the FSB is so you know what is interchangable.

Info about the intel Processors.

Where can you get those cracked versions of Windows XP? I have a computer for my daughter but it has no operating system. Is it something you burn to a disk to install? I have everything but the operating system. Also where do I get a key generator if it's needed for this kinda deal?? Thanks! You can PM me if you want.

And it most likely won't let you activate it either. If you find a cracked version be aware that Microshaft has that new verification thingy where your basically SOL on any major updates if your machine isn't valid.

you can still get around it. the MS Genuine Advantage was cracked within 24 hours of it being released a while back and even the forced checks that MS now imposes on you while trying to update your machine can be avoided with a registry hack.

M$ still allows all computers, legitimate or otherwise, to get critical security updates. Everything else, they attempt to block.

There is Autopatcher for those who don't want to visit M$ to get updates, or prefer them all in one package. http://www.autopatcher.com/

Yea u can upgrade to xp pro with out a problem, but like suggested above, i would format it first in NTFS and then install it. As far as speakers go i have creative 2.1 330watt system from walmart for 20 bucks and its decent. The bass isnt the greatest but what do you expect for 20 bucks
