PDA questions

ok, heres my situation. I'm going to college next year and my parents are going to buy me a PDA for my graduation. The thing is, i dont really know a whole lot about them. My friend has an Ipaq 3630 and I really like it, but I cant find a price for it anywhere.... My parents dont really want to spend very much on it though (which is strange coming from my dad who just bought a 61" HDTV and a 600w surround sound system).

I went to Staples yesterday and was looking through what they had there and I like the Palm M130 - does anyone know if its a good PDA or not? If i did get it I'd also buy a 32mb expansion card as it only has 8mb on it.

Palm M130

Or i guess, are there any other ones you guys would suggest? There are only 3 things I want it to have - color screen, rechargable battery (not AAA's) and capability for wireless internet because its only going to cost me $10/month on campus next year.

Thanks

iPAQ all the way baby!!!

the reason you can't find a price on the 3630 is because the 36xx series has been discontinued.

I have both an iPAQ 3635 and 3870

They are both fine machines, and kick any Palms ass any day of the week (I have owned a few Palm OS devices, so I do know about them).

However, iPAQ and other PocketPC's arent cheap! Your looking at at least $350 minimum for a decent device.

If price is a big obstacle, there is nothing wrong with a low priced Palm OS device, they are very capable (I just prefer all the bells and whistles).

Here's a pic of my iPAQ's:

More pictures of them and all my accessories here:

yep, pocketpc's use much faster processors (look for new devices to start using a 412mhz processor in the next few months). however, the pocketpc (windows CE) OS requires much more processing power than the palm OS.

I'm chillin' with an old CASIO Cassiopeia 10(thank goodnesss I didn't pay for it)

It's cool and all... no color though.

I don't use for too much other than keeping phone numbers and addresses, and sometimes emails. It does all I need it to do. So if price is a concern, you don't have to get to the top to be satisfied.

Stupid question... what is AvantGo?

oh, i have another ? too about wireless internet on PDAs. The friend of mine who has the Ipaq 3630 and is going to college w/ me says that to get the wireless internet you need a separate wireless antenna? Do I, and how much would one be? I know the palm i was looking at could send info to other palms w/ the infrared sensor and stuff, so i just assumed thats all i needed for wireless internet?? am i totally wrong or what? I'm just all confuzzled...

not a stupid question!

AvantGo is pretty much a provider of multiple types of articles downloadable through your PDA's browser.

to understand better go to http://www.avantgo.com

The infared ports on Palms are really only for sending files or data once in a while -- they can't be used for stuff like surfing the net -- it's just not practical, as you need to be less than a few inches away for it to work. (Although you can use them as universal remotes for your tv or whatever, which is kinda nifty. ;) ) So yes, you'll need to either get a PDA with an antenna built in, or buy one that attaches.

Also, by "wireless internet access," do you mean access over a cellular phone connection, or over a wireless LAN system (provided by some facility on your campus)? Those are two different things, so you need to make sure you get the right hardware.

If you're going to be using a cellular account for internet access, I think the Palm i705 has built-in wireless capability. Also, I read about some company that's got a new cell phone/PDA all in one product that you might want to check out. Unfortunately, I have no idea who makes it or what it's called...

As for me, I'm happy with my little m105. It's enough to hold my appointments, a few classic games, and a searchable database of over 300 mixed drinks with recipies and instructions (the "chick drinks" category is especially useful).

Oh, I almost forgot -- I have a couple friends who have HP Jornadas. They run Windows CE, they're color, and I think they've even got audio capability. Kinda pricey I think, but they really like them. ...Just another thing you might want to consider.

The most important quesation is, What are you going to use it for?

That will determine what direction you should go in. (Palm, Win CE)

Get a Sony Clie. I have the 415 and previously the 320 and loved them both. 415 is nice cuz the screen has a higher resolution. The new Clie's also have extremely strong IR ports; for example while at Applebees (restaurant/bar) I can pull my Clie out and change the channel on the TVs without getting up or being noticed. The Clie IR port is good for at least 30 ft., maybe more. IR ports on other palms do rather suck though.

The problem with IPAQs (Pocket PCs) and even color Palm devices is battery life. With an IPAQ you'll be lucky (or so I've been told/read) to get 8 hours of battery life. With a decent amount of daily use during college I get 1-2 weeks battery life. Really the only thing that isn't practical on a Palm is watching movies, otherwise they can basically do anything an IPAQ (Pocket PC) can do. Some Palms can be used to listen to mp3's also.
