Which vid card ...?

Well, having just gotten Civ IV I have found that my 3-year old GeForce4 MX440 (64-bit) just isn't quite good enough :(

So, in anticipation of my next system (should be sometime early next year) I would like to get the new vid card now. I have never really been happy with ATI cards (though I know a lot of people love them) - I'm more of an NVidia kinda' guy. So I've been looking at the 6600GT and 6800GT Nvidia cards but just can't decide - I'm concerned my current MB isn't good enough to support the 6800GT. It's an IWill KK400 w/AMD 2100+ Athlon, 768Mb of DDR333 RAM, and an 8x AGP port.

So, which vid card would you recommend assuming this will be a 6-8 month set-up (at which point the MB and RAM would be upgraded)? Or would you suggest just getting a relatively cheap 128-bit vid card (recommended for Civ IV) and waiting for the PCI-E port on the new MB to do the real vid upgrade ...?

Depending on what your definition of cheap is here is one:

EVGA E-GEFORCE 6200 256MB 128BIT DDR AGP 8x = $130 @ NICX.com

Damn good card to tide you over (I personaly would wait to get a PCI-E card if you are planing on geting that type of MoBo)

I actually have the exact same card as you have now! I was thinking of getting this card when I found it just now.... but my computer is so old it only has a 4x AGP I REALLY need a new computer!

I have an XFX GeForce 6600GT and am loving it.

Your MoBo should handle it just fine. It may need a BIOS update though. Also make sure you have an adequate power supply.

P.S. I need to buy that game.

I was thinking "cheap" as in a $50 eVGA FX-5500 (128-bit 8x w/256Mb). That will be more than adequate to run Civ IV. Save the extra $$$ for a big upgrade next year if I decide to go that route.

*flips a mental coin for the 131st time*

Good point about the BIOS upgrade, I haven't done that recently since I've not added any new hardware. The power supply should be adequate - I got a nice box and 500w PS the last time I rebuilt. I figured the system would handle the 6600GT OK but didn't know about the 6800GT.

Do you play Civ? What's the last version you have ...?

I recently upgraded to a agp Geforce 6800, not the GT or lite version. It was around $180 and works well. But if you are going to get a new system I would wait and get a pci-e card with the new system. Like a Geforce 6800GT something.

I haven't played it in a long time. But I have...

-Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
-Civilization: Call To Power
-Civilization II
-Civilization II Scenarios
-Civilization III

I think I will pick up Civ IV on Tuesday since a CD I want comes out than also.

That's more of what I'm leaning toward. I've heard the PCI-E ports are a LOT faster than even the 8x AGP. If I'm gonna' spend several hundred for a vid card it had better be a good one that'll last a few years!

Good luck finding it! We've had shortages and even Amazon doesn't have it very often :(

Civ IV is more like a Civ II update than Civ III. A lot of the Civ II things that they did away with in III are back in the game. The biggest change that I've seen is the government types. Instead if one government class (republic, monarchy, etc.) there are five phases of "Civics" - leader type (monarchy, representative, etc.), bureaucracy type, economy, religion (pagan, theocracy, etc), and individual freedoms (slavery, serfdom, free speech, etc.). And it's a whole different game with religion thrown in there!

I have heard nothing but good things about this game. I must get.

I almost got it last week. Best Buy had a full shelf of them at that time. I guess we will see if they still have them tomorrow.

I decided to go ahead and get the eVGA FX-5500. Tiger has 'em for $60 but with shipping and a $15 rebate it ended up at $52. Not bad for a 128-bit 256Mb vid card. When I get the new MB next year I'll be sure and get a PCI_E slot. Then maybe I can put a 7800 GTX in the slot if they manage to drop below $400 by then.

Thanks for your input!

You saw a whole shelf full of 'em?!?

I guess they finally managed to catch up with the demand. I just checked eBay and the prices have dropped on there, too ...

I just blew my load and I didn't even get to the rest of the components.

Yup! I picked up the game today and there was still a whole shelf of them. I am going to sign off and install the game now.

I can do without the high-priced sound card but I'll need 1.5-2 Gb of RAM and a WD 300Gb HD to go with that! I've been using IWill - they make good mid-grade boards but really don't push the envelope much. I almost got a Gigabyte last time then opted to stick with what I know. But I'll have to change this time, I'm sure. Do you have any preference on MB's between ASUS, BioStar, and GigaByte?

The first computer I built myself many moons ago (P3 system) I used an Abit mobo. It was a good board and I would use them again. Well, that is if ASUS wasn't around. When it came time to build a new computer I used an ASUS mobo since I have heard only good things about them. I have to say, the ASUS mobos are sweet. I have used ASUS since than and I will most likely continue to use ASUS in the future.

So I played the game last night. That sure is addicting. I completely lost track of time. Here I am thinking to myself that it is getting late and it feel like is about midnight. I look at the clock and it is almost 1:30 in the morning!!! Needlesss to say I didn't get much sleep last night.

I've heard some really good things about Gigabyte, too - but ASUS is VERY popular and there has to be a good reason for that! I've been through so many different MBs and chips in the last 12 years that I can't remember them all. I think the new computer will be build #6 for my own box but I've built several for buddies over the years. The thing I liked about my current IWill board was being able to crank the chip speed a little using the BIOS. Do ASUS boards have BIOS over-clocking too?

I waited until the weekend to install mine and I still got to bed pretty late Sunday night! Personally, I think it's addiction factor is higher than the previous versions ...

Since ASUS has so many different boards, I can't say if they all do. But the ones I have used and have looked at all do. It's almost scary that it can be that easy to OC.

I personally like the Matrox cards. Rock solid drivers and 95%+ the performance of the bleeding edge 3D cards at 1/2 the price.

Matrox is the King of multi-monitor setups.
