New Project

-I haven't posted on this site in a while, been too busy with the new baby, but I decided I would post what I'm looking forward to building. Actually I need a little help making sure everything is compatible, and/or if the parts I have listed are any good. WB6VPM seems to be "away" from aol right now so I resorted to posting here. I'm going to be buying it piece by piece out of paychecks, and hopefully have it finished in about 2-3 months. Oh yeah, let me know if I forget something.

Here's the list:

Case - Spire Whitefin II (Newegg#: N82E16811220006)

Power - Just PC, 450W (Newegg#: N82E16817181107)

Mother - Gigabyte GA-K8NE (Newegg#: N82E16813128308)

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 2.0GHz operating frequency (Free shipping off zipzoomfly.com)

Harddrive - Western Digital, 80GB 7200RPM, SATA (Free shipping off zipzoomfly.com)

Memory - Corsair, 1GB 184-Pin, DDR400PC3200 (Newegg#: N82E16820145505)

CD/DVD - NEC, ND-3550A (Newegg#: N82E16827152058)

Video - Diamond X1300, 512MB, PCI Express x16 (Newegg#: N82E16814103174)

-Let me know if there's anything wrong with that setup, it seemed fine to me. Total price came to $597.62.

Have you tried to get a price quote on your dream system from a local PC shop?

I don't know about Florida, but up here in Minneapolis there are two shops that give great deals on complete systems, good enough that the mail-order places are getting less and less of my business.

Plus, think of the local taxes you pay vs shipping charges. I'd much rather pay local sales tax (keeping the money in my state) than the 'UPS Tax' anytime.

-I just got back from my local PC shop and we've decided I'm going to grab a better motherboard and Processor (939 socket instead of 754). We also found a Case/Supply combo for less than what I had. I talked to him about building a computer for me, but I realized, 1) I can do it myself, I just have to have someone to make sure I don't do something stupid, and 2) I'm not going to have the money right out to give him. Like I said, I'm buying this computer piece by piece. Not to mention, if he bought all the parts for me, then put them together for me, he has to add markup, along with tax. Buying it piece by piece, on my own is the best way for me to go. The computer store down the road told me I was better off doing it that way. I'm going to him just as a guideline so that what I get, I will be happy with. He said himself that he makes his money off of repairs and software, not selling the hardware.
