Looking at buying Laptop; which one?

I have decided I'd like to have a laptop, and only have a credit line at two places Dell and Hp/Compaq. The two pc's I'm looking at are the Dell Inspiron 6000, and the Compaq v5000z; which one do you recommend?

don't get anything that has a CPU in it from a desktop. I got a compaq that has a P4 in it and the fans never shutoff and hot air is always spewing out of it. I've heard good things about Dell's but never have really used the laptops. preferbly i'd want to get a toshiba for my next laptop.

can't recommend a laptop without knowing your needs

please let us know your primary reason for wanting one over the other (price, vid card, battery life, weight, etc)

Kind of an odd 1st post for a member huh?

Why? I just want to know; which one of the two you'd recommend. I dont want to know any other brands; or else I would have posted others. These are the two I like and can afford.

And no its not an odd 1st post; Ive seen worse!

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING HP/COMPAQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that i have that out of my system... we have a Toshiba M55-S135. Works great for what we use it for. Wireless internet, a little gaming, music.

I'm running a Compaq v2410 right now......AMD Turion 64, 512MB RAM, 128MB ATI video card, 14" screen.

VERY portable, and I like it a lot. Better speaker placement than Toshiba laptops for sure (on the front, so I can close up the laptop and still have full speaker functionality).

I have a Toshiba M35 and it has served me well. No breakdowns or software issues yet, but just remember that Toshibas come with a huge amount of crap already loaded on them (especially programs that start when you turn it on and run in the tray), so you might have to clean off the HD to keep you system from bogging down. I know I did.

i say one of the new gateways, i know they just made one with the ml-37, but i have only had bad things to say with the dells recently, but out of the 2 you picked, id say the compaq, much better overall, except batter life, just guessing id say teh compaq will get about 2 - 2.5 hours and the dell will get around 3, dont quote me on it but it is just going from what i used

We've had a ton of dells, and they are all junk. Never had one that hasnt broken down unusually early. I've only known a few people that had hp's and they havent had any major problems with them. HP's come loaded with better software IMO too.

I wanna let you know that I made my decision, and I chose the Dell Inspiron 6000. I found out that one of my friends had one, so I went over to check it out. Then I went over to CompUSA that same day to see if they had in any Compaq Presario's, but they were bolted down, so I couldnt get a real good look or feel of the pc; hell they have it so you cant even close it. I liked what I saw with the Dell, so I ordered it on Saturday and should get it by the end of the week. Thanks for all of your help and opinions.

I wish I had an ML-37 processor :(
1GB of RAM would be nice too....

Battery life on my Compaq is around 2 - 2.5 hours.....pretty far short of the advertised 3.5 hour battery life. I ordered a 12 cell battery for it a few days ago. Looking forward to 4 or 5 hours of life now

i realy do doubt thatyou will get 5 hours of life on that, you have teh ml-32 right? yeah maybe if you had an MT class cpu then it could get it but the ml's use too much power, and if you realy wanted you can actually just buy the ml-37 cpu and put it in your laptop and also more ram

Want battery life? Get an apple. My apple will run for 5-6 hours no problem.

I'm running an ML-30 processor right now. :(

Considering the fact that it runs 2 or 2.5 hours right now on a 6-cell 4.4 Amp Hour battery, and I ordered a 12-cell 8.8 Amp Hour battery.....sure seems like it'll run for 4 or 5 hours on the new battery :p

And YES, it get's a bit warm.

Seriously I could change CPU's??? Think I could change for an MT CPU without too many problems??? ;)
