Second Opinion...?

Friend wants to sell me his used CRT-Rear Projection Television.

Not in the market for one, but it would be really nice.

Its a Samsung HCM 5525W. I have researched the hell out of it and it appears it might be worth it.

Cons: Old CRT technology, used, perhaps too expensive for such a television

Pros: It's 55" of pure pleasure, very good condition, has remainder of warrant (purchased from Best Buy and will expire 10/16/2006), we believe I can also purchase additional time on warranty, has all recent inputs in back except HDMI (my understanding is that this connection consolidates wires, not really better connection), and is HDTV ready (our cable company provides proper box/tuner)

He bought it new for over $2,000, and wants to sell it for $900. His $300 extended warranty still includes one more 'tune-up' which was done each year. We can have the tune-up done when it is moved to my house. Oh, and free delivery, as he is the only one with a truck between the two of us.

There are obviously a lot of factors, but wanted to get some opinions on this.

Yes?

No?

If the box will do HDTV at 16:9 then it's probably worth it.

CRT isn't that old and won't be phased out anytime soon. I think with that screen size and being HDTV, it's worth it if you have the space for it. Even though prices have come down dramatically in the past few years, I think LCD and Plasma are still too expensive if I don't absolutely need to save on space.

Besides, there's a reason why true gamers still prefer CRT over LCD. I'm sure others can tell you what those reason are.

CRT, while an "old" technology, provides the best picture there is. I say go for it.

My understanding is that CRT has a better refresh rate then LCD, at this time. Fast moving video, like games, are better on CRT.

That is why I have kept my 21" CRT rather then buying LCD. Although, the damn thing is the size of an anchor.

Thanks for the input. Anyone else? Today, it appeared that he won't budge from $900.

CRT has the best/"blackest" blacks of any TV out right now. And yes they have no refresh problems, but Burn in is a worry if playing games. The only problem I can see you having is lack of inputs. According to samsungs site the TV is capable of 1080i HDTV, but only through 1 component input. The other component is only 480i (standard Def). You may need to plan on buying a "switch" to hook all your stuff up too, then putting it all through the 1080i input.

Also the lack of any DVI or HDMI inputs means you won't be able to connect any newer components like a PS3 (in HD), new upconverting DVD players, ect. Movie studios are trying their damdest to require ANY HDTV quality signals to be sent over HDMI/DVI for copy protection purposes.

That said $900 for a HDTV is a great deal! You will NEVER go back to a square tv again.
Or save up $1000 and get this baby:
Toshiba 52Hm95 DLP HDTV $2000 or so
I got the black version and it's absoutly beutiful!

So with the Toshiba, there is only one HDMI? Which of the additional inputs will be used for your DVD and future PS3? Assuming I will use a HDMI input for my digital cable.

The silver 52HM95 has only 1 HDMI, and several component inputs (component is the next best connection). The black model (52HMX95) has 2 HDMI. (TV's are the exact same otherwise). While more expensive, the black one is very much worth it.... looks great and the extra HDMI is very handy. I have a upconverting DVD on 1 and a HD satelite reciver on the other. Without 2 I'd need a switch which are very expensive and cumbersome.

I suggested the silver model only because it's cheaper. If you can go see the black one in a display..... it's incredible. (my dad got me to pick one up for him the next day!)

EDIT Sorry I had the wrong unit #'s canada/US are different :frown: corrected now!
